We have had some cases where we were trying to use an invalid xcache server before the liveness check caught up with the issue. We could add the non-xcache paths to inputs as a last resort.
Pros:
- possibility to recover from xcache issues without adding complicated logic
- could possibly add logic to warn site admins that this is happening
Cons:
- longer time to fail on bad files (2*the number of attempts)
- reading files direct (not through xcache) is pretty unreliable
