This is an automated cherry-pick of #6643

What problem does this PR solve?

Issue Number: close #6638

What is changed and how it works?

Replace NUL-delimited composite key encoding with length-prefixed encoding in the MySQL sink’s cross-event DML batching logic.

Previously, distinct composite keys such as ("a\x00b", "c") and ("a", "b\x00c") produced identical internal keys. The batch merger could therefore treat INSERT A followed by DELETE B as operations on the same row and silently discard the INSERT.

Each column value is now prefixed with its byte length after the existing case normalization. This preserves column boundaries for arbitrary binary values and keeps distinct composite primary or non-null unique keys distinguishable.

Check List

Tests

  • Unit test
  • Integration test

Questions

Will it cause performance regression or break compatibility?
Do you need to update user documentation, design documentation or monitoring documentation?

Release note

Fixed an issue that could cause silent data loss when TiCDC merged DML events for distinct composite keys containing NUL bytes in the same MySQL sink batch. The issue affected both safe-mode settings.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Fixed handling of composite keys containing embedded NUL bytes, preventing distinct records from being treated as duplicates during inserts, deletes, and batched operations.
    • Improved correctness across batch DML, non-batch mode, and safe mode.
  • Tests
    • Added regression coverage for repeated composite-key collision scenarios and verified generated SQL and binary key values.

📝 Walkthrough

MySQL composite-key serialization now prefixes each key component with its encoded length instead of delimiting it with NUL. Unit and integration tests cover embedded-NUL and empty components across safe-mode and batch-DML configurations.

Changes: Composite-key encoding and validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Length-prefixed encoding and unit coverage
pkg/sink/mysql/mysql_writer_helper.go, pkg/sink/mysql/mysql_writer_helper_test.go, pkg/sink/mysql/mysql_writer_dml_test.go
genKeyList now prefixes each encoded key value with its length. Unit tests cover the resulting encoding and verify that composite-key inserts and deletes with embedded NUL or empty components remain distinct across safe-mode and batch-DML configurations. Existing DML test argument expectations use Go’s any type.
Integration coverage across DML modes
tests/integration_tests/batch_update_to_no_batch/data/test.sql, tests/integration_tests/batch_update_to_no_batch/run.sh
The integration test adds a table with a binary composite primary key and runs NUL-containing key scenarios in batch mode, no-batch mode, and batch mode with safe mode enabled.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~10 minutes

Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Suggested reviewers: hongyunyan, charlescheung96

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 83c8d

The fix prevents distinct composite binary keys from colliding and silently dropping an INSERT. The only remaining concern is that the new integration test should confirm the table exists downstream before comparing data. This is a small follow-up and not a production risk.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 83c8d

This is a narrowly scoped data-integrity fix. Length-prefixing separates distinct composite keys without adding privileges or changing persisted event formats. The affected batching and recovery paths were assessed at source level, but end-to-end recovery and deployment behavior were not exercised.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The directly affected asset is downstream replicated row integrity within a table-scoped batch. Upstream key values can influence cancellation and grouping, but the inspected path does not use these encoded bytes to select credentials, grant authority, or address a different service or tenant.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The base implementation allowed distinct component tuples to become identical merger keys, permitting an INSERT to be discarded when followed by a DELETE for another key in the same batch. This condition predates the PR. Length-prefixing removes that component-boundary ambiguity; no introduced or worsened attack path was established in the inspected scope.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Row values used to derive comparison keys remain separate from SQL construction and execution. SQL uses bound arguments, so the newly encoded identity bytes are not interpolated as SQL syntax.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The inspected transition paths retain upstream splitting of key-changing updates, invocation-local merger state, transactional SQL execution, and event-based re-preparation during retry. Thus interruption and repetition do not require recovery of encoded merger keys. This supports failure containment at source level, without establishing runtime recovery outcomes.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Check that the new table exists downstream.

The diff configuration selects this schema, but Line 76 states that sync_diff cannot check a missing table. If composite_key_nul never appears downstream, these new scenarios can pass without validating its rows. Add check_table_exists batch_update_to_no_batch.composite_key_nul beside the existing checks before check_sync_diff. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
