What problem does this PR solve?

Issue Number: close #6644

What is changed and how it works?

  • Select namespace for Classic Kafka producer metrics and keyspace_name for NextGen, matching the existing dashboards. Apply the same rule to the Sarama, franz-go, and shared in-flight metrics.
  • Use the selected label when deleting franz-go metric series during cleanup.

Check List

Tests

  • Unit test:
    • GOTOOLCHAIN=go1.26.9 make unit_test_pkg PKG=./pkg/sink/kafka P=2 — 292 tests passed with race detection and failpoints.
    • GOTOOLCHAIN=go1.26.9 make unit_test_pkg_next_gen PKG=./pkg/sink/kafka P=2 — 292 tests passed with race detection and failpoints.
  • Static checks: make fmt, make check-next-gen-grafana, and git diff --check passed.

Kafka integration tests were not run locally.

Questions

Will it cause performance regression or break compatibility?

Classic retains the existing namespace label. NextGen Kafka producer metrics use keyspace_name, consistent with the NextGen dashboard queries and the existing kernel-specific metric-label convention. Custom NextGen queries using these metrics' old namespace label need to use keyspace_name after upgrade.

Label selection runs during metric initialization and cleanup. No performance benchmarks were run.

Do you need to update user documentation, design documentation or monitoring documentation?

The existing NextGen dashboards already query keyspace_name; the emitted labels now match them. No dashboard regeneration changes are required.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Updated Kafka producer metrics to use the correct keyspace label for both legacy and next-generation runtimes.
    • Improved metric cleanup and reporting consistency across runtime types.
    • Preserved existing changefeed and other metric labels.

Use namespace in Classic and keyspace_name in NextGen for Kafka producer
metrics and cleanup, matching the generated dashboards.

Extend the metrics hook test to verify exported labels in both kernels.

📝 Walkthrough

Kafka producer metrics now use keyspace_name in next-generation deployments and namespace otherwise. Metric cleanup uses the same runtime-specific label. Tests validate the expected label for each runtime.

Changes: Kafka keyspace metric labels

Layer / File(s) Summary
Select the keyspace label for Kafka metrics
pkg/sink/kafka/metrics.go
getKeyspaceLabel() selects keyspace_name for next-generation deployments and namespace otherwise. Kafka metric vectors use the selected label.
Apply the label to Franz metrics and cleanup
pkg/sink/kafka/franz_metrics.go, pkg/sink/kafka/franz_metrics_hook.go, pkg/sink/kafka/franz_metrics_hook_test.go
Franz producer metrics and metric cleanup use the selected keyspace label. The test checks for the expected label for each runtime.

Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Suggested reviewers: hongyunyan

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 82f45

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 82f45

The change is mergeable with a bounded testing follow-up: extend the label test to cover Sarama producer metrics so a label regression cannot go unnoticed.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to c2f40

The change is limited to producer telemetry and preserves Classic behavior. NextGen custom queries using the old namespace label require migration. Metric creation and cleanup remain aligned, and the reviewed changes do not expand privileges or introduce a new access path.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated propagation is across Kafka producer telemetry families and their consumers. Renaming the label key does not itself grant authority over the represented keyspace or changefeed; existing identity values and cleanup matching remain in use.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The new selector returns one of two fixed label names based on kernel type. It does not accept a caller-provided label key. Cleanup remains constrained by both the existing keyspace value and changefeed name.

Explanation

Issue #6644 requires NextGen Kafka producer metrics to expose keyspace_name for dashboard filtering. pkg/sink/kafka/metrics.go and franz_metrics.go select keyspace_name for NextGen and retain namespace for Classic. The change covers in-flight, rate, latency, batch, compression, throttle, request, and outgoing-byte metrics. franz_metrics_hook_test.go gathers exported metrics and checks the selected label in both kernel builds.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within the Kafka producer metric-label scope of issue #6644. The dynamic label helper, franz-go cleanup update, Classic compatibility, and dual-kernel label test support the metric behavior. No unrelated production behavior or unrelated files are changed.

Explanation

The description includes the required issue reference, problem statement, implementation details, test results, compatibility and performance impact, documentation assessment, and release note. It also discloses that Kafka integration tests and performance benchmarks were not run.

Seed all changed producer metric families before gathering.

The test emits only the franz-go hook families and requestsInFlightGauge. The seven producer families populated by saramaMetricsCollector remain empty, so Gather() does not inspect them. A regression that restores namespace for one of those families can pass this test.
