fix(test): bind and serialize queue lock ownership - #7508
Bind test-queue ownership to process-start identity and serialize lock generation changes. PID reuse no longer makes a dead run look live when reliable start identity is available; unknown or legacy identity retains the conservative live-PID veto.
A permanent SQLite sibling protects liveness checks, stale retirement, owner publication, member registration and release. Another updated runner cannot replace a generation between the liveness decision and retirement. Failed publication never recursively deletes the current canonical lock; unsafe paths and storage errors refuse unguarded changes.
The release path now retries short SQLite busy waits under the existing ten-second monotonic elapsed deadline. It no longer delegates the whole budget to a single native busy wait. Zero/non-finite budgets make one immediate attempt; non-busy errors propagate. Identity revalidation, rollback, close and generation preservation remain unchanged. The final native wait can still overshoot its requested slice: this is not a hard real-time bound or a deadline for ACL/filesystem work.
Old in-flight runners do not participate in the new gate; let them finish before upgrading. No live runner or operational configuration was changed by this PR work.
Verification
Current public head: b7c4ae349544b40cf7a3dfdc49336f3044710fd8, after the maintainer's integration of dev c2f3d8b4. Current-head automatic CI is running and full cross-platform CI is queued. The earlier validation below remains attributed to its named candidate and does not establish current-head success.
Earlier validated candidate: 8496e1b38414d8c93731c58fbb44e6b259cb79a1, test-only follow-up to normal dev integration 4d7cf518978d22e90e5278ba095546960e535e98 (parents public becee7211e94ed4b9e2fed4cdc7b2354880a081d and dev 5d995c956dd970be3cb9fc1cad9cb78300060ba0). The former #7627 dependency has landed; this PR targets dev. Runtime and configured test runner remain Bun 1.4.4, and all four dependency inputs are unchanged from the validated frozen install.
Official Windows Bun 1.4.4+38afee6c8: the changed stale-verdict case passed 1 test / 3 assertions. Root TypeScript and the 11-file privacy/size/diff checks passed on 8496e1b3.
On integrated parent 4d7cf518, generation, owner/member identity, ACL and layout coverage produced 68 passes and one failure. The failure assumed two polls would fit within 20 ms; only one was observed. The test now advances its logical clock at the actual observation boundary while retaining the real gate, filesystem and sleep, the 20 ms/5 ms options, and the original assertions. Previously passing unchanged units were not repeated or relabeled as a full run of this head.
A separate 15-second monotonic escape bounds the defective-cache case. A controlled counterfactual that reused the first owner liveness verdict failed at the intended freshness assertion, rather than setup or the test timeout. The original production file was restored and verified after termination. No counterfactual code is committed.
Production APIs, PID/start-identity policy, the ten-second release budget, the 13-second assertion and test timeouts are unchanged. All executions reached native exit and output EOF; owned processes and fixtures were cleaned up.
Earlier full CI passed on becee721; it does not qualify this new head. Historical macOS timing failures and Bun 1.4.3 results remain comparison evidence, not new macOS 1.4.4 proof. No live runner, service, account, global configuration or dependency installation was changed.
Explicit current-head maintainer/security acceptance remains outstanding. This focused Windows validation does not establish full lifecycle/raw-path behavior on other platforms or a current-head full-suite PASS. The original historical CI/stale/heartbeat causes remain unconfirmed.
Checklist
Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
Docs or release notes were updated when needed.
Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults.
This candidate is prepared for maintainer/security review. Current-head repository gates and explicit security acceptance remain required before landing.

Summary
Process-start identity and liveness checks scripts/test-run-lock.ts, tests/ci-workflows/test-runner.test.ts, tests/helpers/nested-test-run-lock-controller.ts
Owners and members can record process-start identities. Linux, macOS, and Windows readers provide identity evidence. Only differing valid identities from the same platform establish PID reuse. Member paths incorporate a hash of readable identities; unavailable evidence preserves the live-PID veto.
The permanent SQLite gate validates its path and file identity and serializes lock operations. Generation checks constrain publication cleanup, release, and stale-lock retirement. Documentation describes these operations and compatibility limits.
Tests cover identity parsing and liveness, gate coordination, acquisition and release, and preservation of lock state when operations fail. Worker fixtures coordinate lock operations. The generation test is assigned to the CI workflow test layout.

⚠️Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Move the process-start probe before mkdirSync(lockPath) so the incomplete-owner window stays short.
Line 815 runs readStart(evidence, ownerPid) after mkdirSync(lockPath, { mode: 0o700 }) at Line 813. Line 817 writes owner.json only after the probe returns.
Probe duration: On Linux the probe is a pair of /proc reads. On macOS it is a /bin/ps spawn with a 3-second timeout (Line 472). On Windows, if OpenProcess cannot open the PID, it is a PowerShell/CIM spawn with a 5-second timeout (Line 571), plus PowerShell startup time.
What other runners see: While the probe runs, the lock directory exists without owner.json. Any other runner gets readOwner() === null at Line 845. It then depends on incompleteOwnerIsRecent (Line 847) and its 10-second INCOMPLETE_OWNER_GRACE_MS.
Failure mode: Suppose the grace period expires during a slow probe. Another runner reclaims the directory through reclaimStaleLock and creates its own lock. This runner's writeFileSync(..., { flag: "wx" }) then fails with ENOENT. The catch at Line 818 runs rmSync(lockPath, { recursive: true, force: true }), which deletes the other runner's new lock.
Current status: The current timeouts keep the probe under the grace period, so this is not a defect today. However, the probe does not need to run inside this critical section. ownerPid and its start identity do not depend on owning the lock directory.
Read the identity once before the loop or before mkdirSync. Then only the record write stays between directory creation and owner publication. ownerPid is constant for the call, and one process's start identity cannot change while that process is alive. This also removes one probe per retry iteration.

Needs fixes before this can land: register both lock scripts and the expanded scope in structure/manifest.json, regenerate structure/INDEX.md, and resolve the metadata thread. Current manifest lists only tests/ (structure/manifest.json:1030). Then obtain maintainer/security review and native-platform evidence.
Still needed on dev: yes — liveness remains PID-only and retirement lacks generation serialization (scripts/test-run-lock.ts:417, :442, :545).
Exact-head CI at triage time: 1064ed3 — aggregate ci and Ubuntu 4/4 PASS; no failing/pending checks. Windows/macOS skipped; lane=all on exact head: no.
Please refresh onto current dev when addressing these; heads older than dev need a fresh exact-head CI run before review.
Register both test-run lock scripts and the expanded cleanup-document scope
in the Structure manifest, then regenerate the source index.
Preserve the existing process-start identity and SQLite gate implementation
and dev's fixture owner-drain contract while refreshing the PR onto ceef488.
Addresses the metadata follow-up in lidge-jun#7508.
Implemented: registered both lock scripts and the expanded cleanup scope in the Structure manifest, regenerated INDEX, and replied to the metadata thread, which is now resolved. The branch incorporates current dev ceef4889e4666dc0492a375d272eafa5b785361e through a normal two-parent update. Source HEAD and handoff records were rechecked before publication; no intervening branch writer was found.
Technical/security review: an independent read-only review covered the original nine-file patch, relevant ACL/identity helpers, and final merge tree da5f94fd20057724568da7b063e088cfc45a810c. No confirmed introduced defect or merge regression was found. The permanent SQLite gate still serializes authoritative acquire/retire/register/release, unknown or incomparable identities retain the live-PID veto, non-ESRCH errors stay conservative, and failed publication does not recursively delete a foreign owner. Dev's fixture-owner probe preserves roots with open/acquiring/closing owners and does not manipulate the Bun gate. Existing mixed-version limits remain documented.
Validation: Linux Bun 1.4.4 SSOT+generation 60 pass / 287 assertions; focused user-lock 44 pass / 1 Windows-only skip / 130 assertions. Those unchanged code/test/helper blobs were retained through the final dev refresh. The imported teardown behavior additionally passed 15 tests / 47 assertions on the final tree. Final Structure SSOT, TypeScript, privacy, file-size ratchet and diff checks passed. Existing installed dependencies were reused locally, so fresh lockfile installation is a CI obligation.
Remaining gates:new exact-head PR CI was queued at submission; no current-head success is claimed. Exact-head manual lane=all is not yet dispatched: this session has no dispatch connector and no signed-in GitHub browser. Native Windows FFI/CIM equivalence and the raw POSIX path cases remain distinct from injected-identity regression coverage. The configured runner is still 1.4.3; local 1.4.4 evidence is labeled separately.
@lidge-jun@Ingwannu — please provide explicit maintainer/security acceptance for this head once the required fresh CI/native evidence is available. This COMMENT records technical findings and is not an approval. The PR is Draft with the remaining gates unchecked. No force push, upstream merge, auto-merge, workflow-policy change or Security Cloud scan was performed.
Full-platform lane=all validation is dispatched for 42cd74229691d9460a4891e74bc26cff88a8d3da: run 40053863295. It uses a temporary upstream CI ref pointing to that exact commit; the PR branch and base are unchanged. Results are pending, so no duplicate dispatch is needed.
Additional native Windows evidence with official Bun 1.4.4: the production process-start reader returned timestamps exactly matching an independent, PID-filtered CIM CreationDate query for the probe and its live child (0 ms difference for both). The child exited naturally with code 0, and both owned processes were absent on final readback. The tested production blob matches this PR head. This check does not establish PID-reuse handling, cross-user access, full lock lifecycle correctness, or which internal reader path supplied each value. The outstanding maintainer/security acceptance remains separate.

Supplementary Linux evidence at 42cd742, with no additional tracked code changes.
Ran one private-fixture probe using official Bun 1.4.4+38afee6c8, from the repository root with its normal test configuration: 4 pass, 0 fail, 24 assertions, exit 0. The probe imports the actual openTestRunLockGate / withTestRunLockGate implementation (blob 07bed5d5a4f5cbe6cfc31ff0a775998006e08bef) and passes raw strings without first applying join or resolve.
Raw path case
Observed result
Literal POSIX backslash in a private parent
Realpath preserved the literal directory name; the exact regular, single-link, mode-0600 gate opened and retained its inode across reopening. No forward-slash alternative path appeared.
symlink/.. with different lexical and physical parents
Refused before entering the callback; neither parent received a gate, and both sentinels were unchanged.
missing/..
Refused with ENOENT, no callback, and no normalized sibling gate created.
Canonical spelling vs trailing slash
The second connection returned busy without invoking its callback while the first held BEGIN IMMEDIATE; it entered after rollback and retained the same gate inode.
Only task-created mode-0700 fixture directories were used; SQLite handles were closed before private cleanup. The repository remains clean at the published head. Temporary probe SHA-256: a45340c963325a494251d644058344ceae94bad19cd8423344758ccad7fcc7ad.
This adds Linux gate-path evidence only. It does not establish Windows/macOS native behavior, FFI/CIM agreement, or the complete owner acquire/release lifecycle for raw path spellings. The existing current-head PR CI remains the CI run to follow; no rerun or manual lane=all was started. Fresh native-platform evidence and maintainer/security acceptance remain open, so the PR stays Draft.
Independent source review (gpt-6.1-sol, dispatched by the triage manager, 2026-10-24) at head 42cd742296:

P1 — Verification blocker:scripts/test-run-lock.ts:513 and scripts/test-run-lock-gate.ts:50 introduce Windows FFI and platform-sensitive SQLite/ACL behavior. Required PR CI remains queued; exact-head full-platform run also has Windows/macOS jobs queued. Fix: obtain successful required CI and lane=all results, plus native FFI/CIM agreement evidence. Injected identities and historical runs do not establish this.
P1 — Security-review blocker:scripts/test-run-lock-gate.ts:50 changes filesystem permission enforcement and :88 controls destructive generation transitions. Explicit current-head maintainer/security acceptance remains absent, as required by MAINTAINERS.md:63 and :74. Fix: record that acceptance before integration.
No confirmed introduced correctness defect found. Previous metadata finding is fixed at structure/manifest.json:1033; INDEX is updated and the sole review thread is resolved. Regression tests cover generation contention, holder death, publication failure, and conservative identity handling; layout and fixture registrations exist. layout.json remains 1,999 lines; the changed structure document is 128/600. No changed-file size violation found.
PR template sections are present. Targets dev, 0 behind / 4 ahead, mergeable, still Draft.
NOT RUN: tests, typecheck, builds, or executable repository gates—read-only review as requested.
This is a read-only source review; merging still requires the gates named above (exact-head CI, lane=all where marked, and maintainer acceptance where required).
Instrument the real release() path with temporary bun:sqlite mocks so a bound violation reports open/pragma/BEGIN/close timings. Correctness check (generation preservation) now runs before the timing bounds. Budgets and SQLite behavior unchanged; diagnostic prints only when the 13s bound is exceeded.
The full-platform run on 42cd7422 failed the same busy-owner release assertion twice on macOS: 13,464 ms and 13,441 ms against the 13,000 ms upper bound. This is not yet attributed to connection setup, SQLite contention or runner delay.
66cb104c4f34f05a580a9e3131950a7a10374e63 adds test-only stage timing for the real release path (database open, PRAGMA, BEGIN and close). The elapsed value is captured immediately at the release boundary; generation preservation is checked before the timing assertions. The 10-second busy budget, 13-second assertion and all production/permission code are unchanged. Diagnostics print only on an upper-bound violation and contain no paths or process identifiers.
Official Bun 1.4.4 on Windows: the affected test passed (25 assertions, native exit 0), all four stages were observed, and typecheck/privacy checks passed. This validates the diagnostic, not a macOS fix. Native macOS attribution and final current-head CI remain pending; the PR stays Draft.
sqlite3_busy_timeout bounds cumulative scheduled sleep, not elapsed time;
hosted darwin runners overshoot it past the release bound. Retry BEGIN
IMMEDIATE in 250ms slices under a monotonic deadline so the wait is
bounded in elapsed time. The deadline covers only gate entry; a granted
action still runs to completion exactly once. busyMs=0 keeps its single
immediate attempt.

The #7627 branch was deleted after its merge, which closed this dependent PR. The fix at becee72 is not in dev, so I restored this PR against dev without changing its head or existing review state. Current-dev integration and updated validation will follow; required maintainer acceptance is unchanged.
Preserve process-start owner/member evidence, serialized generation transitions, bounded elapsed release waits and non-destructive uncertainty handling. Retain landed Bun 1.4.4 role defaults and the body-observed upload fixture; combine structure and layout registrations.
Keep the real generation gate and filesystem, original 20ms/5ms queue settings and stale assertions. Advance the test clock only at wait/fresh-owner evidence boundaries and retain a monotonic escape under the existing internal deadline. Restore the spy and remove the fixture after acquisition settles.
Maintainer integration decision (v2.93.0 release lane L-A, admin decision authority granted by the repository owner): MERGE into dev.
Exact head b7c4ae349544b40cf7a3dfdc49336f3044710fd8 is author head 8496e1b3 with current dev merged in, with no conflicts. The effective diff against dev is the lock scripts, their tests and docs, and the layout/structure registrations. Full-platform lane=all on the exact head: 40274755720success. This covers Windows 9/9 (FFI/CIM identity) and macOS 3/3 plus control, which is where the earlier busy-owner release timing failed at 42cd7422.
Independent security review (gpt-6.1-sol, role=review) at this head: PASS, 0 blocking. Acquire, retirement, registration and release are serialized. Unknown identities and non-ESRCH errors preserve liveness, and a failed publication never recursively deletes another owner's state. The release gate now uses a monotonic deadline with 250 ms SQLite slices. The earlier sol MUST-FIX items (missing lane=all and missing acceptance) are resolved by the run above and this decision.
The remaining CodeRabbit thread on .github/actions/setup-project-bun/action.yml is outdated: that file has no effective diff against dev, because it came from chore(test): align Bun runner with the 1.4.4 security baseline #7627, which already landed. I'm resolving it as obsolete.
Combined tree with current dev and fix(service): preserve Windows probe support across Node and Bun #7722: tsc --noEmit, structure:check, layout and file-size ratchet, and the lock generation tests all pass, 200 pass / 0 fail. On the earlier combined tree, test-runner.test.ts plus the lock tests gave 120 pass / 0 fail with Bun 1.4.4.
