fix(service): preserve Windows probe support across Node and Bun - #7722
Keep Windows supervision usable from the Node launcher and Bun runtime while resolving system PowerShell independently of caller-supplied environment paths.
Bun uses GetSystemDirectoryW; Node derives the directory from consistent loaded kernel32.dll and ntdll.dll paths. Missing, malformed, duplicate, truncated or inconsistent evidence remains unknown.
Use a minimal PowerShell environment with module autoloading disabled and Utility loaded before CimCmdlets. Cache successful directory resolution only; process snapshots stay fresh.
Document the Node >=18 import contract, resolver assumptions, subprocess budgets and remaining unknown outcomes in a dedicated supervision document, linked from both mapped ownership documents. Existing anchors remain valid, and the ownership map/index is updated. Synchronous resolution has no separate timeout, and file existence checks do not establish signatures or execution-time identity. Plain unknown does not introduce a new fail-closed policy.
Earlier author head ed86105e20ea546a367301337b5f4a0a02bb1417 completes the supervision source-to-document map and moves the unrelated WidgetKit and sidecar packaging contracts into the existing desktop-shell reference. The four-file follow-up preserves the content and existing anchors. Runtime implementation and the Windows supervision/settings tests remain unchanged from the tested 5a5fed9 head.
Verification
Current public head: 514c31b0d092931aac697f0bc64f5c645a8b1de7, after the maintainer's integration of dev c2f3d8b4. Current-head automatic CI is running and full cross-platform CI is queued. The earlier validation below remains attributed to its named candidate and does not establish current-head success.
Runtime and test runner remain Bun 1.4.4.
The code-bearing head 5a5fed9 passed full cross-platform run 40208094045: 28 successful jobs / 6 conditional skips, including Windows and macOS lanes. Its automatic PR CI also passed. These runs belong to 5a5fed9, not the later documentation commit.
At 5a5fed9, the Windows settings diagnostic passed 1 test / 9 assertions; TypeScript, structure, scoped privacy/size and committed-diff checks passed. Native exit, both output streams and cleanup were verified.
Native Windows x64 evidence: the unchanged resolver implementation was exercised under Node 24.18.0 and Bun 1.4.4 at f8806729, including environment changes after startup, system PowerShell selection, owned process identity and absence after natural exit. These native receipts are retained separately from the 17 tests / 199 assertions using injected resolver/process evidence. Linux CI is not Windows acquisition evidence.
Documentation structure/index and five-file privacy/size checks passed at 2be9a5c8; a trailing blank line was then removed. The later CI failure on 82c0abd7 identified a test still reading the moved contract from the old document. At 2ba67c35, that test reads the dedicated reference, preserves every consent-boundary assertion, and also checks the old anchors and forwarding links. The file passes 13 tests; its scoped privacy/size and committed-diff checks pass. That head's PR CI 40221185829 passed.
At author head ed86105e, structure checks and generated INDEX parity passed, the desktop-install identity oracle passed 13 tests / 66 assertions, and four-file privacy/size plus committed-diff checks passed. Every native unit exited 0 with both output streams complete, no remaining direct child and verified fixture cleanup. Exact-head automatic CI 40232322132 passed.
The earlier f8806729 macOS control run returned null instead of version 0.133.0. The later full run passed, but the earlier failure's cause is not established; failure-only diagnostics remain. The independent launcher repair fixture investigation is not claimed fixed by this PR.
WoW64, ARM64, a real Desktop-positive supervisor, compiled packaging and live installation remain unverified. No installed app, service, account, certificate store or global configuration changed.
Review status
Node/Bun entry points and ownership policies reviewed.
Mapped ownership documentation updated; native and injected evidence distinguished.
Known failures and platform limits recorded.
Local documentation gates and final whitespace check.
Current-head automatic PR CI.
Required maintainer security review before merge.
The source-map and document-placement review comments are addressed by the current documentation follow-up. Existing maintainer change requests and required security approval remain separate; this is not a merge or deployment approval.
resolveWindowsSystemDirectory previously required process.versions.bun,
so under Node the guard threw before execute() and the live-Desktop veto
probe could never reach PowerShell: every inspection collapsed to a plain
unknown, which is intentionally nonblocking.
Node now derives the directory from process.report.sharedObjects instead:
exactly one well-formed kernel32.dll and ntdll.dll namesake must share one
case-insensitive parent, duplicates/malformed/truncated/missing namesakes
reject, and the candidate must contain both DLLs and the v1.0 powershell.exe.
Only .sharedObjects is read (never the env-bearing report), a resolved
directory is memoized for the process lifetime while failures keep their
retry-on-next-call contract, and the Bun lane keeps its FFI resolver behind
a try/finally lib.close(). Unavailable or ambiguous reports remain the
bounded unknown residual; WoW64/ARM64 enumeration forms stay unverified.
windowsProcessScript also imports Microsoft.PowerShell.Utility before
CimCmdlets: the CimCmdlets manifest calls Set-Alias during its own import,
which PSModuleAutoLoadingPreference 'None' cannot supply.

Summary
System directory contract and resolution src/service/desktop-supervision.d.mts, src/service/desktop-supervision.mjs, tests/service/service-desktop-supervision-windows.test.ts
The declarations accept a system-directory resolver. Bun uses GetSystemDirectoryW; Node validates reported kernel32.dll and ntdll.dll paths and checks required files. Tests cover valid and rejected paths.
The probe builds its executable path and restricted environment from the resolved directory. It disables module autoloading and imports Utility before CimCmdlets. Tests cover probe configuration and resolver failure handling.
Supervision documentation and references structure/ops/desktop-supervision.md, structure/desktop-shell.md, structure/ops/service-and-sidecars.md, structure/INDEX.md, structure/manifest.json, tests/clients/desktop-install-identity.test.ts
A new document covers ownership, supervision, consent, and related operational behavior. Existing documents and the structure index reference it, and the documentation test checks the updated location.
The test captures runtime resolution timing and cache state. On version assertion failure, it reports summarized probe failure reasons and settings projection details.

Explanation
The title "fix(service): preserve Windows probe support across Node and Bun" matches the main change. The PR replaces the SystemRoot/windir environment lookup with a trusted system-directory resolver, which Bun gets from GetSystemDirectoryW and Node derives from loaded kernel32.dll and ntdll.dll paths. It also restricts the PowerShell environment and keeps probe support on both runtimes. The title is specific and concise, and it follows the conventional commit style. It does not cover the new documentation, but the title does not need to cover every detail.

…failure (PR 7722)
Diagnostic-only candidate for the macOS control failure where codexRuntime.version arrived null instead of 0.133.0 while runtime, config-routes, and helper blobs were identical to a passing control. The case now keeps the resolveCodexRuntimeAsync result, times it, peeks the process memo right after resolve, and only on failure appends a path-free snapshot (runtime source/version, env-candidate hit, classified probe-failure reasons, cache kind/epoch/identity, codexRuntimeStateEpoch, and the projected codexRuntime without paths) to the assertion error. Success output is unchanged; no commands, env, or exec output are emitted; probe reasons are capped to the fixed classifier set plus a coarse deadline bucket.
…age (PR 7722)
Review follow-up to c47a266: drop the catch/rethrow rewrite and carry the diagnostic on the existing version expect's message slot (established expect(actual, message) convention). The test body returns to its original inline type and try/finally shape; resolve timing, the resolved result, and a read-only cache peek are captured as consts and rendered only on failure. Diagnostics now report resolveMs, resolved source/version with classified probe-failure reason buckets, cache kind/epoch, and projected source/version/warningPresent - no valueIdentity, warning text, commands, env, or exec output.

Reviewed f8806729403f61bf8fd0334d3bb43bcebe2ec59e and all three changed files. Exact-head Cross-platform CI 40186939556 is now successful, including its desktop-shell job; its Windows matrix was skipped, so that result is not native Windows execution proof.
Documentation blocker:src/service/desktop-supervision.mjs changes the default process-reader acquisition contract from environment-derived paths to two runtime-specific resolvers, adds a new bounded unknown outcome, success-only caching and a reduced PowerShell environment/module-load sequence. Please update the manifest-mapped ownership documents, especially structure/desktop-shell.md (Runtime ownership, from the app's side) and structure/ops/service-and-sidecars.md, to explain the Bun FFI / Node sharedObjects alternatives, why environment paths are no longer accepted, the unavailable/ambiguous/truncated evidence residual, and the limits of the runtime/Windows evidence. The existing “bounded process snapshots” sentence does not describe this new prerequisite. Keep the Node >=18 import contract explicit and cite the Node enumeration assumption/version basis.
This also changes executable/module selection at a trust boundary and retains the explicit maintainer review requirement; no sponsorship/exception is being granted here. Please retain the native Node and Bun Windows receipts in the verification section, separately from injected resolver tests and Linux CI. No Windows host, live service or Codex Security scan was used in this review.
…ition contract
Explain the runtime-specific system-directory resolvers the default Windows process reader now requires before its bounded Win32_Process snapshot: Bun GetSystemDirectoryW via bun:ffi, Node process.report sharedObjects enumeration with one well-formed namesake per KnownDLL. Records why caller-supplied environment paths and the fixed fallback are no longer accepted, the bounded unknown residual (missing, ambiguous, duplicated, truncated or unusable evidence never proves absence), success-only directory caching with fresh per-call process snapshots, the minimal PowerShell environment and explicit Utility-then-CimCmdlets module loading. Keeps the Node >=18 import contract explicit, cites the Node report API version basis, and scopes positive evidence to Node 24.18.0 and Bun 1.4.4 on Windows x64 with WoW64, ARM64 and Desktop-positive paths unverified. Addresses Ingwannu review documentation request; no code or test changes.
…ding
The six-second budget and three-second acquisition timeout bound scheduling, not the complete inspection: synchronous system-directory resolution runs before the PowerShell subprocess and carries no separate timeout. The candidate check is an F_OK existence check, not a signature or type guarantee. Review follow-up wording only.
Move the Runtime ownership section and the new Windows acquisition contract out of desktop-shell.md into structure/ops/desktop-supervision.md, which now owns the supervision module contract. desktop-shell keeps both heading anchors with concise forwarding links so existing inbound anchors still resolve; service-and-sidecars links the new authority for probe acquisition and residual limits. Keeps the 6 s scheduling-budget / 250 ms floor / 3 s subprocess-timeout nuance, F_OK existence-check wording, Node >=18 import contract, Node report API version-basis links and the bounded unknown residual. INDEX.md regeneration and structure:check are queued for the sole-runtime Bun 1.4.4 slot.
Updated the mapped ownership documents and supervision reference through ed86105e20ea546a367301337b5f4a0a02bb1417. The acquisition contract and existing anchors are preserved; the source map now covers the documented consumers, and unrelated WidgetKit/sidecar packaging text lives in the desktop-shell reference.
The 13 documentation contract tests, structure checks, generated INDEX parity and scoped checks pass. Exact-head PR CI 40232322132 also passed. Runtime implementation remains unchanged from 5a5fed9, whose full cross-platform run 40208094045 passed; the PR body keeps native Windows evidence and injected tests separate.
Maintainer security review and the listed native integration limits remain outstanding.

The WidgetKit appex and prepare-sidecar paragraphs at the tail of
ops/desktop-supervision.md are packaging contracts unrelated to
supervision; move them into desktop-shell.md beside the existing
Widget snapshot and packaged keyring sections. The doc's manifest
