Note from Kelly Heitz

I'm pretty sure the CEO at my last job found this during my application, due to a comment made several months later, but no one asked me about it. So I want to clarify why I was interested in contributing to this project. It was not because my voice is under-represented in tech (I'm personally pretty comfortable speaking up in meetings). I also want to make it explicit that if I work with you, and you find this project - please feel free to ask me about it!

My interest in this project actually derived from my time as a high school teacher. Research shows that around middle school, girls stop participating out loud in classrooms. While we can't be sure what mix of forces affect this, we also have broad, repeated research showing that teachers tend to interact differently with girls than boys: generally, girls are called upon less, given less time to cohere a response, and receive less praise for public contributions. Teachers (mostly women, still!) tend to not let girls hold the floor when they aren't sure, but let boys think through problems out loud and provide more coaching through that.

Since I used to be a language teacher, and an integral aspect of mastering a world language is actually practicing speaking, I was intrinsically interested in how I could foster equal participation in my classroom. A common teaching approach when you are working on something is to ask a peer to sit in your classroom to provide you with feedback and observation. This struck me as an excellent tool for that scenario!

This is a silly & simple website for measuring who's dominating a conversation.

Use this at events! In meetings! While watching TV! The possibilities are endless.

Why

When people talk about diversity & inclusion in tech, they often count bodies - what % of women at this company, what % women at an event, etc. But...inclusion is more than who's in the room. Often, in rooms that seem diverse, men still dominate conversations to a large extent.

I'm exploiting the mantra of "what gets measured gets managed" - hopefully, measuring participation can highlight disproportionality & ultimately make room for more voices.

Notes

  • Be careful about making assumptions about someone else's gender - this is best for situations where you know everyone or where people have disclosed their gender.
  • This is a side project, and as such, I won't be implementing feature requests. If you'd like to contribute a feature though, I'm happy to discuss in the issue tracker. Keep in mind that I place high value on maintaining clarity/simplicity.

Steal this code

Gender is only one of many flavors of diversity. Time talking is a simplistic measure of participation. You're welcome to take this code, adapt it, & produce other hacks for inclusion. I wana see what you make - please do share! @cthydng
