fix(snapshot): decode readdir buffer entries as UTF-8 so exclusions match - #243

Conversation
…atch
readdirSync with encoding "buffer" returns a Uint8Array on Bun, not a
Buffer, and Uint8Array.prototype.toString() yields comma-joined byte
values ("46,100,...") rather than the name. Every comparison against
BRAIN_SNAPSHOT_EXCLUDED_ENTRIES therefore missed, so each archive packed
in .snapshots - its own directory - and every snapshot carried its
predecessors and grew without bound, until a dream run passed its timeout
and died mid-write. Decode either shape through one helper, and assert
the archive carries neither excluded entry.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to No actionable merge risk remains: snapshot exclusions are decoded before comparison, and the 1.77.1 release metadata is consistent. Pre-merge checks |

172-203: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick winExercise the
Uint8Arrayexclusion path directly.Bun’s
readdirSync(..., { encoding: "buffer" })returnsBufferinstances. The current archive test therefore uses theBufferbranch. Reverting toentry.toString()would still decode those entries correctly, so the test would remain green and would not cover theUint8Arraybranch. Add a focused assertion for aUint8Arrayentry.Suggested fix

The archive test only reaches the `Buffer.isBuffer(e)` arm: Bun's
`readdirSync(..., { encoding: "buffer" })` hands back `Buffer` instances,
so reverting `bufferEntryName` to `e.toString()` would leave it green and
the `Uint8Array` arm - the one that exists precisely because Bun yields
byte values instead of text - untested.
Feed a bare `Uint8Array` straight to the decoders, single-byte and
multibyte UTF-8, so the arm is pinned rather than assumed. Reverting the
fix now turns both red.
Also adds the missing `[1.77.1]` comparison reference.
Problem
Every
dreamrun takes a pre-run recovery point intoBrain/.snapshots/<run_id>.tar.zst. On a vault of any age those archives grow without bound: measured here, one per day,9 MB -> 24 -> 38 -> 66 -> 200 -> 358 -> 652 MB -> 1.2 GB. Past a certain size the run exceeds the caller's timeout, dies mid-write, and leaves a multi-gigabyte*.tar.zst.partial-*behind, failing the job that took the snapshot. An archive's contents are not just
Brain/: it carries the.snapshotsdirectory itself, historically including every predecessor archive, which is the growth.Root cause
createSnapshotlists the top-levelBrain/entries and drops the onesBRAIN_SNAPSHOT_EXCLUDED_ENTRIESnames:readdirSyncwithencoding: "buffer"returns aUint8Arrayon Bun, not aBuffer.Uint8Array.prototype.toString()renders the comma-joined byte values -"46,100,97,...", the UTF-8 bytes of.daily-data.json- not the name.isSnapshotExcludedEntrycompares that string against.snapshotsand.artifactsand never matches, so the exclusion never fires and both entries are archived. This does not depend on the tree, only on the runtime returning a
Uint8Array. A probe on this host:Buffer.from(e).toString("utf8")decodes either shape correctly.Fix
One helper,
bufferEntryName, decodes a buffer entry to its UTF-8 name throughBuffer.from, which accepts aUint8Arrayor aBuffer; the exclusion filter uses it. Nothing else about the member walk changes.sortedMemberskeeps its ownreaddirSync(..., { encoding: "buffer" })andBuffer.compare, because it orders by bytes and never compares against a name.Testing
A test asserts the archive carries neither
.snapshotsnor.artifacts, and that a kept sibling is still there. With the fix the archive no longer carries.snapshots; reverting the one decode line makes the test fail with the excluded members present.Measured on the affected vault: the pre-fix archive was 1,209 MB and the run timed out at 180 s; post-fix the archive is 0.6 MB and the run completes in 43 s.

.snapshotsand.artifactsdirectories, including when directory entries are provided as byte data. This prevents excluded files from being added to archives and helps avoid unnecessary archive growth and interrupted writes.
