Field Treatments

You can also color the field or a charge with more than one color or fur, by specifying how it should be split up:

Per pale or and sable	Per fess or and sable	Per bend or and sable	Per bend sinister or and sable	Per cross or and sable	Per saltire or and sable	Per chevron or and sable

The names used are also names of "ordinaries": geometric shapes used as designs on a shield; we will get to those shortly. Note that the order the colors are given in makes a difference: the first color is the one that goes on top or on the left.

I used or and sable here only for the purposes of illustration; you can use any colors or even any furs, or even more complex treatments.

Lines of Partition

The lines separating the pieces of the shield do not have to be straight. There are permitted variant lines:

Per fess wavy or and sable	Per fess indented or and sable	Per fess dancetty or and sable	Per fess nebuly or and sable	Per fess embattled or and sable	Per fess dovetailed or and sable	Per fess raguly or and sable

(It isn't so easy to see some of them; the teeth in "indented" are pretty small, and this list isn't exhaustive anyway.)

More Pieces

You can also divide up the field into more pieces, along "ordinary" lines:

Paly or and sable	Barry or and sable	Bendy or and sable	Bendy sinister or and sable	Checky or and sable	Lozengy or and sable

You can use lines of partition on these as well, and also specify just how many pieces you mean:

Bendy dancetty or and sable	Paly of six or and sable	Bendy sinister of sixteen or and sable

Proper rules of heraldry say that the number of pieces should always be even, but pyBlazon doesn't really care.

You can also divide the field up radially, describing it as "Gyronny." Normally gyronny is in eight pieces, but as before, you can make it as many as you like. Using an odd number here will probably not do what you want, though, since the colors alternate.
