U12(1+2) — task save-stage semantics + finalize open partial tool ask

Part of the PR #1066 split (tracking issue #703). Own issue: #1933. Content source of record: 72143527fd33306e5541116093c2cbf803cce9e0..pr-1066-audit).

Why this unit exists: saveClineMessages() reports the message-write stage independently of the metadata/task-history stage, and finalizePartialToolAsk() closes an open partial tool ask by type+text. Planned as two units (U1 stage semantics, U2 finalize); merged because the stage-semantics tests call finalizePartialToolAsk, so the test blocks cannot be split without orphaning them (test-block atomicity). Soft budget overshoot: 481 a+d.

Boundaries

  • base: 72143527fd33
  • head: cf5abe64d
  • content source: 72143527fd33306e5541116093c2cbf803cce9e0..pr-1066-audit (local)

Fidelity (machine-verified)

zdt split verify --contract U12.json --worktree <wt> --head cf5abe64d

Result: PASS — standalone 481 a+d / 3 files (SOFT-OVERSHOOT (rationale required in PR body))

  • src/core/assistant-message/__tests__/presentAssistantMessage-custom-tool.spec.ts: OK (content subset of source)
  • src/core/task/Task.ts: OK (content subset of source)
  • src/core/task/__tests__/Task.spec.ts: OK (content subset of source)

Budget rationale (soft overshoot): see the deviations list

Design contract

Verification (this unit, as pushed)

  • Tests: 218 passed / 5 skipped (narrowest suites: Task.spec, writeToFileTool.spec, presentAssistantMessage-custom-tool.spec, removeClineFromStack-delegation.spec)
  • changed-line coverage: 18 covered / 0 uncovered — PASS
  • ESLint (--prune-suppressions --max-warnings=0): clean on every touched file; suppression counts unchanged
  • No .changeset file, no CHANGELOG edit.

Recreate policy

If the bot stalls on a pre-merge check and the existing head cannot obtain bot review/approval (empty-commit re-trigger attempted and failed), the unit is recreated from the tagged content source of record — never from a per-PR head. At most 1 PR per issue.

Linked issue

Closes #1933 (unit U12 of the #1066 split). Split plan and tracking issue: #703.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Partial tool requests are now more reliably marked complete and answered when finalized, with progress indicators cleared. When request text is provided, the matching request is finalized; otherwise, the latest matching request is selected.
    • Finalization updates are shown only after the message is saved successfully. Errors while updating task history or refreshing the display no longer incorrectly report a successful message save as failed or undo finalization.

Walkthrough

Task message persistence now reports message-array write failures separately from later metadata or task-history errors. A new method finalizes a matching partial tool ask, persists it, and updates the webview when persistence succeeds.

This change separates message-write failures from later metadata errors and avoids updating the webview when message persistence fails. No actionable PR-specific regression is established; the change is ready for normal checks.

Full details: Regression Evidence

Explanation

The changed metadata-stage behavior lacks focused negative coverage. saveClineMessages now catches failures from taskApiConfigReady and taskMetadata at Task.ts:1707-1723 and returns true at Task.ts:1742, but the added stage test only rejects updateTaskHistory (Task.spec.ts:6176-6206). The other added failure test covers the message-write stage (Task.spec.ts:6218-6258). No focused test forces metadata derivation or readiness to reject and verifies that the saved messages still produce a successful result and the webview update.

Resolution

Add a Task-layer test that persists the message array, forces taskMetadata or taskApiConfigReady to reject, and verifies that saveClineMessages() returns true, logs Failed to save task metadata:, and allows finalizePartialToolAsk() to call updateClineMessage. Keep the existing message-write and task-history failure tests.

…tests

The task uuid is mocked to a fixed value, so the ui_messages.json this save writes outlives the test that
created it. The sibling test below removes the whole directory and recreates it, which is the only reason
the leak has not surfaced: with merge = true, any later save that reads its merged output would fold in a
stale record and fail by run order rather than by behavior.

The body now runs in try/finally, removing ui_messages.json and restoring both spies whatever the
assertions do. The spies moved out of the try so the finally can see them.

Local run: 162 passed in Task.spec.ts (the one remaining failure, blocks a truncated write_to_file call
instead of executing it, fails identically at cf5abe6 without this change - local artifact), eslint
clean, no suppression change.

Fixed at cf9206a42. The body now runs in try/finally: ui_messages.json under the fixed (uuid-mocked)
task id is removed and both spies are restored regardless of how the assertions land. The spies moved out
of the try so the finally can see them.

I kept the shared directory itself in place — the sibling test that removes it recreates it in its own
finally, and other tests in this block persist through the real fs — so the cleanup is scoped to the
record that actually leaks.

Local run: 162 passed in Task.spec.ts; the one other failure ("blocks a truncated write_to_file call
instead of executing it") fails identically at cf5abe64d without this change, so it is a local artifact.

e2e-mock red at c4ca65816 — evidence that this is the known flaky restart-persistence step, not this PR

What actually failed. Job 113657575830 (run 37880099804). Step 14 Run mocked E2E tests = success. Step 15 Run mocked restart-persistence E2E test = failure. Inside that job the create phase passed (✔ persists completed task across a fresh extension host (1026ms), 1 passing); the failure is in the verify phase, in the fresh extension host:

[restart:verify] [createTaskWithHistoryItem] taskScheduler.schedule failed: TaskMessagesReadError:
Failed to read task messages for 01a11ec0-9f7e-72db-9721-1c8b2d4d28f4 at /tmp/roo
      at readTaskMessages (src/dist/extension.js:713525:11)
      at async Task.resumeTaskFromHistory (src/dist/extension.js:718509:41)
      at async TaskScheduler.schedule (src/dist/extension.js:592485:7)
  1) Restart persistence
persists completed task across a fresh extension host:
      Error: Timeout after 30s (out/suite/utils.js:15:20)

The delta cannot have caused it. The previous head on this branch, cf9206a42, ran this same job green on 2026-10-06 (run 37516254245: full suite success, restart-persistence success). The only commit between cf9206a42 and c4ca65816 is test(task): check the saved payload in finalizePartialToolAsk test, which changes one file: src/core/task/__tests__/Task.spec.ts (+13 / -2). That is a Vitest unit-test file; the mocked E2E suite never loads it, and no production file changed. The branch base is unchanged (72143527f).

The same step is flaky across unrelated branches. Among the last 30 failed e2e-mock runs, four failed at exactly this step while the full mocked suite passed:

run branch full suite restart-persistence TaskMessagesReadError
37880099804 (#8273) this PR success failure yes
37762259575 (#8064) vps2-f2c success failure no
37706659841 (#8027) feat/chat-input-model-selector success failure yes, identical signature
37626907243 (#8021) feat/dte-v2-3-task-runtime-effort success failure no

The feat/chat-input-model-selector branch has nothing to do with this series and hit the identical TaskMessagesReadError in the verify phase.

The same code passes elsewhere in this series. Four sibling PRs carry the identical U1 Task.ts content (the saveClineMessages stage split and finalizePartialToolAsk) and passed this step:

PR run restart-persistence
#1929 37873787271 (2026-10-09 02:16:30Z) success
#1928 37854340884 success
#1931 37833581055 success
#1932 37774292614 success

Local reproduction status, and why it is not a Vitest run. This check is not a Vitest suite: it is xvfb-run -a pnpm --filter @roo-code/vscode-e2e test:ci:mock followed by TEST_FILE=restart-persistence.test USE_MOCK=true xvfb-run -a pnpm --filter @roo-code/vscode-e2e exec node ./out/runTest.js. It needs a bundled extension (src/dist/extension.js), a built webview (webview-ui/build), a compiled e2e app (apps/vscode-e2e/out) and a downloaded VS Code binary (.vscode-test/); none of those artifacts exist in the Windows working copy here, so a local green would first require the whole build chain rather than a focused test run. The automation token cannot rerun the job either: POST /repos/Zoo-Code-Org/Zoo-Code/actions/runs/37880099804/rerun-failed-jobs returns 403 Must have admin rights to Repository.

Ask. Please rerun the failed job for run 37880099804. No code change is justified by this failure, and no empty commit is being used; the evidence above is the record. If a maintainer would rather see a local run, say so and we will build the E2E artifacts and run the restart scenario directly.

No code change. This empty commit exists only to obtain a new CI run, because the required e2e-mock check is red at c4ca658 and the failed job cannot be re-run with the token available here (POST /repos/Zoo-Code-Org/Zoo-Code/actions/runs/37880099804/rerun-failed-jobs -> 403 Must have admin rights to Repository).

Why the red is not caused by this branch:
- In job 113657575830, step 14 'Run mocked E2E tests' = success; only step 15 'Run mocked restart-persistence E2E test' failed. The create phase passed ('persists completed task across a fresh extension host', 1 passing); the verify phase threw TaskMessagesReadError: Failed to read task messages for 01a11ec0-9f7e-72db-9721-1c8b2d4d28f4 at /tmp/roo from readTaskMessages <- Task.resumeTaskFromHistory <- TaskScheduler.schedule, then 'Error: Timeout after 30s' (out/suite/utils.js:15).
- The previous head on this same branch, cf9206a, passed both steps (run 37516254245, 2026-10-06). The only commit between cf9206a and c4ca658 changes src/core/task/__tests__/Task.spec.ts (+13/-2), a Vitest unit-test file the mocked E2E suite never loads; no production file changed and the branch base is unchanged (7214352).
- The identical signature appears on unrelated branches: run 37762259575 (vps2-f2c), run 37706659841 (feat/chat-input-model-selector, same TaskMessagesReadError), run 37626907243 (feat/dte-v2-3-task-runtime-effort).
- Four sibling PRs carrying the same U1 Task.ts content passed this step: Zoo-Code-Org#1929 run 37873787271, Zoo-Code-Org#1928 run 37854340884, Zoo-Code-Org#1931 run 37833581055, Zoo-Code-Org#1932 run 37774292614.

…turn-denial-cleanup

U1 is on main now, so this branch no longer carries its own copy of the U1 delta: the diff against main is this unit's own change plus the U7 lifecycle work.

Conflicts were confined to src/core/task/Task.ts and src/core/task/__tests__/Task.spec.ts (the region U1 rewrote):
- Task.ts: kept this unit's evolution of U1's code - the persistTaskMetadata() extraction, the pendingTaskMetadataRepair record and the per-stage result. U1's split semantics (message write reported separately from the metadata stage) are preserved, not re-implemented.
- Task.spec.ts: took main's version of the shared later-stage-failure test (try/finally plus the fixed-task-id ui_messages.json cleanup that cf9206a added) and kept this unit's four dispose-time metadata-retry tests on top of it.

Local verification after the merge: Task.spec 176 passed; writeToFileTool.spec 67 passed / 5 skipped; DiffViewProvider.spec 84 passed; presentAssistantMessage specs 3 + 20 passed; eslint 0 errors / 0 warnings on every touched file; tsc --noEmit reports 62 errors, all in seven files this unit does not touch (stale built @roo-code/types in this Windows worktree) and identical to the pre-merge baseline.

…ilure-boundary

U1 is on main now, so this branch stops carrying its own copy of the U1 delta and the diff against main is this unit's own change only.

One file conflicted: src/core/task/__tests__/Task.spec.ts, in the finalizePartialToolAsk save-stage tests that U1 rewrote. All three hunks took main's side - main's version of the shared later-stage-failure test is a superset of this branch's (try/finally plus the fixed-task-id ui_messages.json cleanup from cf9206a), and this unit adds no tests of its own in that region. src/core/task/Task.ts auto-merged: this branch keeps U1's split semantics rather than re-implementing them.

Local verification after the merge: Task.spec 172 passed; writeToFileTool.spec 49 passed / 5 skipped; presentAssistantMessage-custom-tool.spec 20 passed; DiffViewProvider.spec 71 passed; eslint 0 errors / 0 warnings on every touched file; tsc --noEmit reports 62 errors, all in seven files this unit does not touch (stale built @roo-code/types in this Windows worktree).

All three hunks took main's side - main's version of the shared later-stage-failure test is a superset of this branch's (try/finally plus the fixed-task-id ui_messages.json cleanup from cf9206a), and this unit adds no tests of its own in that region. src/core/task/Task.ts auto-merged.

Local verification after the merge: Task.spec 172 passed; writeToFileTool.spec 36 passed / 5 skipped; eslint 0 errors / 0 warnings on every touched file; tsc --noEmit reports 62 errors, all in seven files this unit does not touch (stale built @roo-code/types in this Windows worktree).

A tool's streaming preview is added as a partial ask. If the tool then
failed (for example "Failed to open diff editor"), the error was reported
but the preview stayed partial, and the webview kept rendering its
spinner indefinitely.

Upstream Zoo-Code-Org#1927 added Task.finalizePartialToolAsk() for this, but only
EditFileTool calls it, from its own anticipated failure paths.
write_to_file, apply_diff, use_mcp_tool (including native mcp_tool_use
calls) and custom tools stream a preview the same way and report failures
through presentAssistantMessage's handleError, which never finalized it.

Both handleError implementations now call finalizePartialToolAsk() before
reporting the error, so every tool gets upstream's handling: it searches
backwards for the partial tool ask, clears its progressStatus, marks it
answered so Save/Reject is not left armed for a write that failed, and
skips the webview update if persisting fails. For EditFileTool the call
is a no-op, since the tool has already finalized its preview.

presentAssistantMessage-partial-tool-ask.spec.ts drives each of those
tools through a streamed preview and a failure, with the real
finalizePartialToolAsk; without the handleError call all four cases fail.
