fix(security): guard mobile booking check-out and check-in against cross-user use - #2886
Conversation
…ss-user use SELF_SERVICE holds `booking:checkout` in the permission matrix, so the role gate on these endpoints passes for ANY booking id in the organization. Neither route read `creatorId`/`custodianUserId`, and neither `checkoutBooking` nor `partialCheckoutBooking` checks ownership itself -- verified, both have zero ownership references. So a SELF_SERVICE user could check out another member's booking. 918d53d fixed exactly this on bookings.fulfil-and-checkout.ts in July. The other two mobile checkout routes were never swept: bookings.fulfil-and-checkout.ts guarded (918d53d) bookings.partial-checkout.ts NOT guarded <- detail.dev D005 bookings.checkout.ts NOT guarded <- not in the scan at all Both now mirror that guard. `bookings.checkout.ts` already loaded the booking for its conflict window, so it only needed the select widened; partial-checkout loaded nothing, so it gains the org-scoped fetch too -- a foreign-org id still 404s before the ownership check runs. The guard is a no-op for ADMIN/OWNER, pinned by a test on each route so this cannot regress into blocking admin workflows. Both regression tests were confirmed failing against the unguarded routes. Updating the existing suites' mocks was necessary because the guard resolves the caller's role through `getMobileUserContext` -- that they broke is the evidence it is on the path. detail.dev finding D005, plus one sibling the scan missed.
The sweep the security reviewer asked for found the mirror of the checkout bug. SELF_SERVICE holds `booking:checkin`, `checkinBooking` has zero ownership references, and the route never loaded the booking at all -- it went straight from the role gate to the mutation. So a SELF_SERVICE user could check in another member's booking. Same guard as the checkout routes. `role` was already resolved in this handler for the explicit-checkin policy, so only the fetch and the guard are new. Two corrections to my own earlier sweep, both from grepping for one guard shape when the codebase has two: - `bookings.partial-checkin.ts` looked unguarded but is not -- it reads `custodianUserId` and calls `canUserManageBookingAssets`. - `bookings.add-scanned-assets.ts` likewise. Counting `validateBookingOwnership` alone undercounted both. The corrected sweep covers `canUserManageBookingAssets` and inline `creatorId`/ `custodianUserId` comparisons too. After this, the mobile booking mutations still lacking any ownership guard are `bookings.update.ts` and `bookings.$bookingId.model-requests.ts`, both gated on `booking:update`. They need their own verification -- the service may guard, as `updateBasicBooking` appears to -- so they are deliberately not in this commit.

`getMobileUserContext` returns `roles[0]`, so a membership ordered `[SELF_SERVICE, ADMIN]` resolves to SELF_SERVICE. `validateBookingOwnership` only lets ADMIN/OWNER through, so an actual admin was refused on a booking they did not personally create -- a false NEGATIVE, not a hole, but it would have looked like a broken app to the one customer it hit. The context now also exposes the full `roles` array, and the guards resolve through `resolveMostPrivilegedRole`, which prefers OWNER then ADMIN. `role` keeps its existing meaning, so the 80-odd other consumers are untouched -- changing that globally is a larger behaviour question than this PR should answer. Applied to `bookings.fulfil-and-checkout.ts` as well: the flaw predates this PR (918d53d passed the same `role`), and fixing three of four would have left the inconsistency behind. This is the same trap as the OWNER check in #2883, where reading `roles[0]` would have missed an owner who also holds another role. Both regression tests were confirmed failing against the roles[0] behaviour. Raised by Codex on #2886.

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~25 minutes Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to The change prevents self-service users from mutating other members’ bookings, but the new ownership tests may pass even when the route returns an unexpected result, leaving an authorization regression insufficiently detected. Merge should wait for response assertions or explicit owner acceptance of this bounded test risk. Possibly related PRs

What
A SELF_SERVICE user could check out — and check in — any other member's
booking in their workspace, via the mobile API.
detail.dev finding D005, plus two sibling routes the scan never named.
The bug
SELF_SERVICE holds both
booking:checkoutandbooking:checkinin thepermission matrix, so the role gate on these endpoints passes for any
booking id in the organization. Nothing else stood between the caller and the
mutation:
creatorId/custodianUserId;checkoutBooking,partialCheckoutBookingandcheckinBookingall have zero ownershipreferences.
918d53d51fixed exactly this on one route in July. The rest were never swept:bookings.fulfil-and-checkout.ts918d53d51bookings.partial-checkout.tsbookings.checkout.tsbookings.checkin.tsThe fix
The same guard
918d53d51introduced, applied to the remaining three:bookings.checkout.tsalready loaded the booking for its conflict window, soonly its
selectwidened.partial-checkoutandcheckinloaded nothing andgain an org-scoped fetch — a foreign-org id still 404s before ownership is
evaluated, so there's no cross-org existence oracle.
The guard is a no-op for ADMIN/OWNER, pinned by a test on each route so it
can't regress into blocking admin workflows.
Two corrections to my own sweep
I first reported
bookings.partial-checkin.tsandbookings.add-scanned-assets.tsas unguarded. They aren't. They usecanUserManageBookingAssetsand inlinecustodianUserIdcomparisons ratherthan
validateBookingOwnership, and I had grepped for only one of the twoguard shapes this codebase uses. The corrected sweep counts both, and both
routes come back clean.
Worth recording because the same one-shape grep is what would have missed
bookings.checkout.tsin the other direction.Still unguarded, deliberately not here
bookings.update.tsandbookings.$bookingId.model-requests.tshave noroute-level ownership guard, both gated on
booking:update.updateBasicBookingappears to guard internally, so these need their own verification rather than a
reflexive fix. Flagged rather than silently swept in.
Tests
18 pass across the four mobile booking suites. Each new guard was confirmed
failing when removed — the SELF_SERVICE case asserts the service is never
called, not merely that the status changed.
Updating the existing suites' mocks was unavoidable: the guard resolves the
caller's role via
getMobileUserContextand loads the booking. That thosesuites broke is the evidence the guard sits on the live path.
