feat(estop): Restore an active E-Stop on boot - #558
An active E-Stop now remains latched across reboot or power loss and is restored during startup. The system retries saving activation and release changes if a save is delayed or fails.
Disabling E-Stop or performing a factory reset clears the latch. If the saved state cannot be read, the system treats E-Stop as latched.
Documentation
Added guidance on E-Stop latch behavior and storage.
Replace the littlefs config file with an NVS store. The config component
becomes a framework (Nvs, Section, Store, Wire, Parse) and every module
owns its own section: rf and estop in device_control, wifi, backend and
otaUpdate in core, captivePortal in captive_portal, serialInput in
serial_console.
The store is the new cfg partition (the 1.x littlefs config partition
retyped as data/nvs, same offset and size). On the 1.x table it lives in
the shared nvs until cfg exists; the first boot that finds cfg erases
the leftover littlefs and moves the config over. An empty store is
filled once from the 1.x config file, else from defaults.
The E-Stop latch is kept in the estop namespace, and WiFi credentials
are one blob each. The WiFi driver's own NVS store is compiled out.
Add partition_layout (parse the binary table, retype one entry in place
and re-seal its MD5, guarded table write with write-back) and
Config::MigrateToCfgPartition, which retypes config as cfg. Nothing
calls it yet.
- Copy the schema marker into cfg last, so an interrupted move is redone instead of trusted.
- Stay on the shared nvs partition when the copy into cfg fails.
- A section that fails to load runs on defaults without erasing its namespaces (WiFi networks, E-Stop latch).
- After a failed load or partial save, a section's next save rewrites every key.
- Load a store marked by a newer schema instead of refilling it.
- Renumber JSON credentials with id 0 or a duplicate id so none are lost on flash.
- Normalize the E-Stop config in SetEStopEnabled.
A newer NVS format on cfg means a rollback; erasing it would lose the config the newer firmware still expects. The store now runs on defaults in RAM instead, and never falls back to the shared nvs while cfg exists.
…opped
The task sets s_estopActive and then clears s_externallyTriggered. Reading the active flag first could see it still unset and then see the trigger already cleared, reporting an active E-Stop as not stopped.
Every config type now meets one compile-time contract instead of a comment. The default constructor is the only definition of the defaults (ToDefault is gone), and Normalize() is required and run by Section on every value it takes in (load, update, import, reset), so no setter can skip the validation. EStopConfig drops its own Normalize calls.
…ore branch
The latch (LoadEStopLatched/SaveEStopLatched, its restore in EStopManager::Init and the task's writes) moves to its own branch, feat/estop-latch, which reverts this commit on top.
Restores the persisted latch split out of feat/config-nvs in 7838a40: the estop namespace's latched key, written by the E-Stop task on every activation and clear, and read in EStopManager::Init before anything can transmit.
Develop carries the reworked config-nvs (#548) and the 1.x removal (#552), so the merge takes develop's tree and
ports this branch's own changes onto its config API: the persisted E-Stop latch (OpenForLoad/OpenForWrite,
StorageLabel) and the IsEStopped read order. The latch test that covered the shared-nvs move is dropped with the
migration.

Walkthrough
The change adds a separately stored E-Stop latch in NVS. The manager restores the latch during initialization and saves activation and clear state changes. Host tests and documentation cover storage behavior, reset, and retry handling.

Summary
Latch storage contract and persistence components/device_control/include/estop/EStopConfig.h, components/device_control/src/estop/EStopConfig.cpp, components/config/host_test/main/*, docs/STORAGE.md
The configuration API reads and saves the latched key in the estop namespace. Host tests cover default and persisted values, clearing, factory reset, lock contention, and separation from JSON configuration.
Manager restore and save flow components/device_control/include/estop/EStopManager.h, components/device_control/src/EStopManager.cpp, .changes/estop-latch.md
The manager restores a stored latch during initialization and saves latch changes during sampling. Failed writes are retried, and initialization drops a stored latch when E-Stop is disabled.

A storage read failure during boot can bypass a previously saved E-Stop latch and allow transmission. Make this path fail closed before merging; manager-level host coverage would also strengthen regression protection.

Explanation
The title "feat(estop): Restore an active E-Stop on boot" matches the main change. The summaries show EStopManager loading a persisted latch during Init and restoring the active state, with EStopConfig adding the load and save functions and the estop NVS latched key. The title is specific and concise, and it follows conventional commit style.

🟡 Changes recommended
Unresolved storage-error handling can release a persisted E-Stop at startup or suppress latch writes, allowing a later reboot to release the stop without a button clear.
This PR adds persistent E-Stop state to the firmware’s configuration storage so saved activations can be restored at startup before transmission begins.
Changes:
Adds latch storage, startup restoration, and retry handling for deferred or failed writes.
Adjusts software-trigger read ordering in IsEStopped.
Adds host tests and documentation for latch persistence and reset behavior.

components/device_control/src/EStopManager.cpp
Restores and persists latch state; adjusts trigger reads.
Add a host test that runs the real EStopManager through activation and boot restore.
The latch tests in components/config/host_test/main/test_estop_latch.cpp call Config::SaveEStopLatched and Config::LoadEStopLatched directly. No host test compiles or runs the real EStopManager. The config host target does not compile EStopManager.cpp. The device_control host target links host_fakes.cpp, which replaces EStopManager::Init.
A regression that removes the activation save (EStopManager.cpp:78) or the load in EStopManager::Init (EStopManager.cpp:258) would not fail any host test. Driving the real manager requires GPIO and task setup, so the test needs more work than the current latch tests.

Add a host test that exercises the real EStopManager through activation and boot
restore, rather than calling Config::SaveEStopLatched and
Config::LoadEStopLatched directly. Update the host test setup so it compiles and
links EStopManager.cpp instead of substituting the fake Init, and provide the
GPIO and task setup needed to run it safely. Verify activation persists the
latch and a subsequent manager initialization restores it.

Treat a failed latch read as latched at boot.
When Nvs::Handle::OpenForLoad fails with any error except ESP_ERR_NVS_NOT_FOUND, LoadEStopLatched returns false. EStopManager::Init then starts with no latch, and the RF transmitter accepts commands. The header documents that a read error reads as latched. Return true when the namespace cannot be opened.
Suggested fix
auto handle = Nvs::Handle::OpenForLoad(partition, kNamespace);
if (!handle) {
- return false;+ return true; // A read error reads as latched
