perf: Decrease hub network latency even further - #556
IDF's default modem sleep (WIFI_PS_MIN_MODEM) has the AP hold frames for the hub until the next DTIM beacon, so
every gateway or local command arrived up to a beacon interval late (typically 100-300 ms). CommandHandler now posts
OPENSHOCK_EVENT_DEVICE_ACTIVITY for accepted commands, at most once a minute; WiFiManager's update task turns power
save off on the first one and back on after an hour without activity. The first command of a session still waits
for the beacon.
The transmit task sent one frame for every active sequence before it looked at its queue again, so with N shockers
live a new command or Stop waited up to N frames (45-77 ms each). It now sends one frame per pass, round-robin, and
drains the queue in between. E-Stop is still checked before every frame.
Every esp_partition_read is a SPI1 transaction that disables the flash cache and, on dual-core chips, stalls the
other core (WiFi/lwIP) - serving the portal's index.html.gz took 375 of them. Read-only mounts now map the partition
and read with memcpy through the cache, falling back to esp_partition_read if the map fails. OTA unmounts static0
(CaptivePortal::ForceClose) before rewriting it, so the mapping never sees a partition change under it.
One INFO line per partition with the total, the throughput and the time in erase, write, hash and progress
reporting; the rest is the network. Shows whether OTA is bound by the download or by the flash before deciding how
to overlap them.
The 5760-byte default caps a download at one window per round trip (~190 KB/s at 30 ms) and stalls the sender while
an OTA erases a flash block. Raises the peak heap a busy TCP socket can use; measure OTA time and free heap on a
device before keeping this.
develop moved build-time tunables into per-component Kconfig fragments; the hour the radio stays awake after the
last shocker command is one of them, so it is now CONFIG_OPENSHOCK_WIFI_POWERSAVE_IDLE_MS in the WiFi menu. The
5 minute floor keeps it well above CommandHandler's once-a-minute activity refresh.
…osts
Every gateway reconnect and every HTTP request after the server closed the kept-alive socket did a full handshake:
certificate chain verification and the key exchange, around a second of CPU. CONFIG_ESP_TLS_CLIENT_SESSION_TICKETS
lets a client offer its last session instead.
esp_websocket_client builds new transports for each handle and GatewayClient recreates the handle per connection, so
GatewayClient now owns the TLS and websocket transports and passes them as ext_transport. It saves the session on
CONNECTED and offers it on the next connect, rebuilding the transports when the host changed or no session was saved.
HTTP::Client turns on save_client_session and closes rather than destroys its handle when the server closes the
connection, so the next request resumes. esp_http_client would offer the session to any host the URL names, so a
handle is only reused for the host it was created for.
A server that declines the session gets a full handshake, as before. Needs verifying on a device against the gateway.
esp_http_client caps each transport read at its receive buffer, 512 bytes by default, so a 4 KB body read was eight
TLS reads and parser passes. It is now CONFIG_OPENSHOCK_HTTP_RX_BUFFER_SIZE, 2 KB.
esp_websocket_client delivers a message larger than its 1 KB buffer in pieces, which GatewayClient reassembles into a
copy. CONFIG_OPENSHOCK_GATEWAY_WS_BUFFER_SIZE, 2 KB, keeps more messages on the in-place path. The client allocates a
receive and a send buffer of that size, so this costs 2 KB of heap per connection; the HTTP buffer costs 1.5 KB per
client.
The connect backoff was built with the same first and capped delay and never reset, so every attempt after a drop
waited 20 s. It now starts at CONFIG_OPENSHOCK_GATEWAY_CONNECT_RETRY_MIN_MS (2 s) and doubles up to the existing
CONFIG_OPENSHOCK_GATEWAY_CONNECT_RETRY_MS cap. It starts over only once a connection has stayed up for the cap, so a
gateway that drops every connection right away still gets the capped delay.
lwIP stops accepting writes once CONFIG_LWIP_TCP_SND_BUF_DEFAULT is unacknowledged, so at the 5760-byte default a
portal asset or a burst of websocket messages went out at one round trip per 5.7 KB. Like the window it bounds
queued data rather than allocating it, but raises the heap a busy socket can hold.
httpd only sets TCP_NODELAY around error responses. httpd_ws_send_frame writes a frame's header and payload
separately, so Nagle held the payload until the client acknowledged the header, which a delayed-ACK client does up to
~200 ms later. An open_fn now sets TCP_NODELAY on every session.
wsHandler allocated a vector for every received frame. It runs only on the single httpd task and onWsFrame copies
what it keeps, so the endpoint now owns one buffer that grows to the largest frame seen (at most
CONFIG_OPENSHOCK_LOCAL_MAX_MESSAGE_SIZE) and lives as long as the portal.
The pull request updates captive-portal socket handling, gateway and HTTP connection reuse, Wi-Fi power-save behavior, RF frame scheduling, and OTA download timing logs. It also adds configuration options and tests for these changes.
Changes: Captive portal session and WebSocket handling
Gateway retries start at a configurable delay and cap at the configured maximum. The backoff resets after a connection remains up for the cap duration.
The HTTP client tracks the host associated with a handle, retains same-host handles for reconnects, retries failures on reused handles, and uses a configured receive buffer.
Device activity and Wi-Fi power save
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Activity event and command reporting components/events/include/events/Events.h, components/device_control/src/CommandHandler.cpp, components/device_control/host_test/main/*
Successful commands post a device-activity event at most once per minute. Host tests cover the throttle boundary and verify that refused commands do not post activity.
Activity-driven Wi-Fi power save components/core/Kconfig, components/core/src/wifi/WiFiManager.cpp
WiFiManager disables power save on activity and enables modem power save after the configured idle duration.
RF transmitter frame scheduling
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Frame scheduling and stop handling components/device_control/src/radio/RFTransmitter.cpp, components/device_control/host_test/main/test_rf_transmitter.cpp
The transmitter processes one sequence frame at a time in round-robin order and checks stop conditions between frames. A test checks that a Stop command prevents the next payload frame for that shocker.

Explanation
The title "perf: Decrease hub network latency even further" is partially related to the changeset. The objectives and file summaries show a broad performance effort: network latency work (TCP buffers, Nagle disabled on captive-portal sockets, gateway TLS session resumption, WebSocket buffer reuse) is present. However, the changes also cover WiFi power save, RF frame scheduling, flash-mapped LittleFS reads, OTA timing logs, and command activity throttling, which the title does not mention. The title is not vague and does not mislead, so it passes.

Add a failed-send case that asserts no activity is posted.
HandleCommand posts activity only when SendCommand returns true. When the RF transmit queue is full, SendCommand returns false, and no test checks ActivityPosts for that case. Moving reportActivity outside the ok check would leave all current activity tests passing.
The host queue fake rejects sends once its length is reached, so the case can be exercised with the existing fixture:

Add a test using the existing host fixture that fills the transmit queue until
SendCommand rejects a command, then verifies that CommandHandler::HandleCommand
returns false and HostFake::ActivityPosts does not increase. Ensure the activity
throttle cannot mask an unconditional activity post, and restore the queue state
so other tests remain isolated.
fakeEventPost counts OPENSHOCK_EVENT_DEVICE_ACTIVITY posts without checking event_base. A post of that event ID on another base still increments ActivityPosts, so the activity tests pass. WiFiManager subscribes on OPENSHOCK_EVENTS, so it would not receive such a post. The current producer uses OPENSHOCK_EVENTS, so this gap does not affect current behavior.

Update fakeEventPost to name and check its event_base parameter, incrementing
ActivityPosts only when both the base is OPENSHOCK_EVENTS and the ID is
OPENSHOCK_EVENT_DEVICE_ACTIVITY.
Cover the failed-post path of the activity throttle.
Cover the failed-post path of the activity throttle.
fakeEventPost always returns ESP_OK, and HostFake has no flag to fail it. No host test reaches the failure branch in reportActivity(). A change that advances the throttle after a failed post would still pass the suite. Add a failure flag to the fake and a test that the next accepted command posts again.
The throttle state lives in function-local statics in CommandHandler.cpp. HostFake::Reset() does not clear them. The new test must advance HostFake::Now past the throttle window first, as the existing activity test does. Otherwise an earlier post can suppress the post under test.

line 373:
Update HostFake and fakeEventPost to support a resettable event-post failure
flag, then add a CommandHandler test that advances HostFake::Now past the
throttle window, verifies a failed activity post is not counted, and confirms
the next accepted command posts again. Keep the test isolated from
function-local throttle state by advancing the clock before exercising the
failure and retry.

… activity interval to it
device_control named CONFIG_OPENSHOCK_WIFI_POWERSAVE_IDLE_MS in a comment, which the Kconfig
ownership check rejects. The activity post interval now lives in events/Events.h, shared by both
sides, and WiFiManager adds it to the idle period: the last activity report can trail the last
command by that long. The idle ticks are computed in 64 bits, since pdMS_TO_TICKS wraps above
about 4.3 million ms.
