Setup Your Development Environment

Jacob Holyfield edited this page May 7, 2021 · 4 revisions

Prerequisites

  • Visual Studio 2019 Community or higher. Ensure you have the Visual Studio .NET desktop development component installed. If it is your first time using Visual Studio with Unreal Engine 4 checkout the Visual Studio Setup For Unreal Engine. Also check out the UnrealVS Extension.
  • ~150GB of free disk space for temp build files that UE4 generates

Install Unreal Engine from source code

  1. First you will need to get access to the UE4 source code. To do that follow the instructions here. Keep in mind you will need a GitHub account and a Epic Games account.
  2. Once you have access to Epic Games git repos clone the latest release of EpicGames/UnrealEngine. It is recommended to put it as close to C:\ as possible to avoid File Path Too Long Errors.
  3. Run Setup.bat to preform initial setup

Setup AirSim-UGC Project

  1. Create a new directory under your UE4 root directory (such as /Games or /Projects) and add the directory to UE4Games.uprojectdirs using your favorite text editor.
  2. Place AirSim-UGC in the newly created directory.
  3. Get the latest AirLib build unzip and place it in AirsimUGC/Plugins/AirSim/Source or if you would prefer to build it yourself follow the setup directions in Microsoft/AirSim and copy AirLib from Unreal/Plugins/AirSim/Source. (Note: There are a few files that have changed slightly from the base AirLib when copping the AirLib Files dont replace the ones that are already there.)
  4. Run GenerateProjectFiles.bat in your UE4 root directory.
  5. Open UE4.sln.
  6. If you haven't yet, build UE4 and UnrealPak projects. Keep in mind that this can take a while depending on your setup.
  7. Verify that the AirSimUGC.Automation project is listed in the Programs/Automation directory.
  8. Open Properties for AirSimUGC.Automation and choose the Build tab on the left. Set the Output Path to your source build's Engine\Binaries\DotNET\AutomationScripts\ directory for both Development and Debug Configurations. The "Browse..." button makes this easy.
  9. Build the AutomationTool project.
  10. Build the AirSimUGC project in the Development configuration.
  11. Build and run the AirSimUGC project in the Development Editor configuration.
