nix fmt aborted with an "unexpected unrecoverable internal error" (assert(maybeFlakeDir.has_value())) if the flake . has no local source path, e.g. if the Git fetcher treats the repository as remote (as with _NIX_FORCE_HTTP=1). Reported to Sentry from 3.24.0 (DETERMINATE-NIX-T3). The bug is also in upstream Nix.

Implementation

Throw a regular error instead. A functional test covers this using _NIX_FORCE_HTTP=1.
