The catalog identifies which saved value belongs to each widget. DynamicGroup rows must keep those identities during import and editing, and ambiguous layouts must be refused before they can write into the wrong field. A node's own declared widget order still controls its mapping.

Summary

  • Preserve existing group fields across import, projection, ordinary/interior/promoted writes, and replay. Keep legal duplicate occurrences, minimum rows, seed companions, and the CLI-derived two-group/DynamicCombo composition.
  • Reject duplicate controllers/template fields, conflicting generated names, and aliases with other dynamic inputs before assigning values to registers.
  • Count changes retain hidden registers and apply fresh-row defaults at projection. An explicit producer form stays authoritative, and count changes requiring a replacement form are refused before mutation.
  • Clarify A24/A25 and KA-12: supplied group metadata is a count-validation exception, not a source of mapping for self-described nodes. Record the exception and the metadata-omission boundary.
  • Compare a declared count with its addressed occurrence, rather than always occurrence zero, across top-level, interior and promoted writes.
  • Refuse counts below the group min: the frontend raises them to min, which would leave document and canvas row counts different. Require integer catalog bounds with 0 <= min <= max, and bound row-field indices by the existing allocation bound.

Affected invariants: KA-3/FC-3 (one portable, pure implementation), KA-4 (rejection, replay and convergence), KA-11 (reader compatibility), KA-12/FC-10 (pinned catalog/producer adoption), and KA-13 (document-owned state).

Verification

  • Focused DynamicGroup suite: 58 passed, one worker. The 8 cases added in 664f965 (catalog bounds, below-minimum counts on each write route and at mint, row-index bound) all fail against 7c39f5b.
  • Six route/occurrence combinations run both arrival orders from one seeded snapshot and repeat the op batch. Rejected count changes use the existing byte-identity, operation-ledger, retry, and abort-remainder oracle.
  • Five individual reverted behaviors are caught: occurrence-zero lookup, each of the three write paths passing occurrence zero, and disabling the selected-layout duplicate guard. The new collision test reaches composition after individual option orders have passed validation; it does not broaden the pinned CLI producer's supported shapes.

Actual local mutant failures include:

checks a declared count for top-level occurrence 1
checks a declared count for interior occurrence 1
checks a declared count for promoted occurrence 1
AssertionError: expected [ 'rejected', 'rejected' ] to deeply equal [ 'applied', 'applied' ]

refuses a controller duplicated only by the selected combo composition
AssertionError: expected [Function] to throw an error

Required clean install/build, purity/import/pin/profile/config/corpus gates: passed. Full tests on 664f965: 1,821 passed, 2 existing skipped; exhaustive tier: 2 passed, 2 other-tier skips, one worker. The final typed test fixture also passed all DynamicGroup cases, typechecks and lint; the statelessness gate passed with 25 source files linted and 18 probe cases. All mutations were restored before commit 7c39f5b.

Scope and rollout

Schema v5 and a catalog hash alone do not enforce reader capability. Released 0.3.10, or a catalog missing group metadata, can mis-bind undeclared positional workflows. Explicit forms preserve existing-field mapping without that metadata, but cannot identify group controllers for count safety.

Deploy compatible producer, complete catalog, reader and document host together; re-mint source workflows when adopting a new catalog. Agent row changes will use whole-group replacement expanded by the CLI into existing ops, per the 2026-10-13 decision. No new operation or schema change is needed here, and #281/#282 are deferred.

Provenance

  • Authored by: interactive session.
  • Verified: local mutation proof, route/occurrence convergence and rejection checks, and repository gates summarized above. The CLI composition fixture retains its immutable producer pin and capture provenance.
  • Deviations: no new wire format, global schema bump or capability admission. macOS path-equality fixtures require a canonical temporary directory; assertions and unrelated source files were preserved.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Dynamic widget groups can now expand or contract based on a row-count setting, with defaults applied to newly visible rows.
    • Values in hidden rows are preserved when the visible layout changes, and supported edits to grouped widgets are reflected in workflow output.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Invalid row counts and count changes that conflict with an explicitly declared widget layout are rejected before changes are applied.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance on dynamic groups, compatibility, and supported editing behavior.

📝 Walkthrough

The change adds catalog support for dynamic widget groups. It expands row-count controllers into indexed widget fields, projects those fields, and validates catalog layouts and count writes. Tests, fixtures, and documentation cover layout behavior, edits, compatibility, and rejected operations.

Changes: Dynamic group support

Layer / File(s) Summary
Catalog metadata and layout expansion
src/types.ts, src/dynamic-groups.ts, src/dynamic-combos.ts
WidgetCatalogEntry now supports dynamic-group metadata. Layout expansion validates group definitions and generates indexed fields and defaults alongside dynamic-combo layouts.
Projection and write validation
src/project.ts, src/applier.ts, src/mint.ts
Projection recognizes dynamic-group fields and uses the combined dynamic-layout check. Widget writes validate group counts and reject count changes when a self-described node’s stored value differs. Minting and node insertion preserve declared widget forms.
Fixtures, tests, and compatibility documentation
test/dynamic-group.test.ts, test/fixtures/dynamic-group*.json, docs/dynamic-groups.md, docs/multiplayer-schema.md, docs/upstream-pins.json
Tests and fixtures cover group layouts, edits, hidden-row values, explicit forms, and rejected operations. Documentation describes compatibility and fixture provenance; upstream pins record source commits and hashes.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to ae2f9

The reviewed DynamicGroup mapping and validation changes have no identified merge-blocking defect. Deployment still requires the documented coordinated reader, catalog, and document updates.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to ae2f9

The updated mapping preserves existing field identities, but an older reader or incomplete catalog can acknowledge an edit to the wrong field. Enabling DynamicGroup support requires coordinated producer, reader, catalog, and host upgrades; deployed compatibility enforcement remains unverified.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · architecture · inferred: DynamicGroup adoption depends on external compatibility admission. An older schema-v5 reader or incomplete catalog can acknowledge a positional edit that changes another field, compromising shared-document integrity. Coordinated rollout is documented, but deployed enforcement is unverified.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The evidenced compatibility failure affects widget values in a shared workflow document. Exposure across multiple documents depends on incompatible reader or catalog admission by their hosts; no cross-tenant reachability or privilege escalation is established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — If a host admits a positional DynamicGroup workflow with an incompatible reader or incomplete catalog, a normal field-edit operation can be acknowledged while changing another row field. Documentation records this behavior; attacker control over compatibility admission and deployed exposure are not established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Operation producers supply inert decoded data; hosts retain responsibility for decoding and wire-size limits. Catalog compatibility is also caller-owned. Projection enforces schema equality, but that gate does not distinguish the documented schema-v5 reader capabilities.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Operation identity and payload-digest checks precede dispatch, making identical replay a no-op and rejecting identity reuse with a different payload. Group validation precedes relevant widget mutations, and rejection aborts the remaining batch; earlier successful operations are not rolled back as a batch.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Before enabling DynamicGroup catalogs, establish fail-closed host admission for both catalog completeness and reader capability, with incompatible combinations rejected before minting, applying edits, or projection. Catalog-hash equality alone is insufficient to establish reader support.

Agent-assisted architecture review notes for Christian's approval decision.

The both-order document tests, hidden-row retention, byte-identical rejection checks, and CLI-authored replay are good. I see one capability blocker and two contract gaps:

  1. A row-count write is rejected whenever widgets_values_form exists and would change. Since an ordinary agent set_widget cannot carry a replacement form, please state whether agent-side row add/remove is intentionally unsupported. If resize is intended, the operation/document contract needs an atomic representation rather than relying on a separate producer mutation.
  2. Add identity cases for a generated field name colliding with an ordinary widget, duplicate occurrences, and two DynamicGroups on the same node. isDynamicGroupField changes generic widget-name validation and projection, so these cases should fail safely rather than aliasing values.
  3. Cover the catalog and doc-host version combinations that will actually overlap during rollout. Unsupported combinations must refuse explicitly rather than reinterpret DynamicGroup positions as trailing widgets; an exhaustive old/new matrix is not required.

Cross-repository approval criteria are tracked in the shared DynamicGroup architecture and safety review.

Superseded (2026-10-13): Agent row changes will use whole-group replacement instead of row-level operations, and comfy-multi-player #281/#282 are deferred. See the scope decision comment below and the decision log.

I have added generated-name collision and duplicate-occurrence guards, a two-group/DynamicCombo/seed/trailing-widget fixture produced by the CLI, and shared replay/refusal tests. The actual released-reader/current-reader probe is documented in the PR: old positional readers can misbind the new layout, so a schema constant alone does not make rollout safe. The existing scalar operation still cannot atomically replace row values, form, links and promotions. Full agent-side row add/remove remains a release blocker for a separate semantic operation and frontend/doc-host integration; this draft only establishes the safety foundation.

Scope proposal (2026-10-13), pending review

Edited 2026-10-14: this was first posted as a decision. It is my proposal and has not been agreed yet.

@christian-byrne this is my proposed answer to question 1 of your 2026-10-05 review. I'd like your take before it is treated as settled.

  • Proposal: the in-app Agent supports row changes through whole-group replacement, expanded by the CLI into existing ops (the count set_widget, then every row field). This PR would need no new operation or schema change for it.
  • This PR stays in first-release scope either way: existing-field mapping, count validation and the identity/composition guards.
  • feat: prepare DynamicGroup row identity reader #281/feat: add atomic DynamicGroup row operations #282 are on hold until this is reviewed.
  • Rollout still requires the compatible CLI, a multi-player release with this PR and the doc-host pin to deploy together before cloud adopts a Core tag with the native LoRA nodes.

Details are in the architecture review.

The frontend raises a remote count below `min` to `min`, so accepting it left
the document and canvas with different row counts. Refuse counts below `min`,
require integer catalog bounds with 0 <= min <= max, and bound row-field
indices by the existing allocation bound. Update the docs for the
whole-group replacement decision.
