The existing flake mixed development toolchains with the Nix package toolchain and carried brittle package and cross-compilation configuration (duplicated attributes, hardcoded version, wrong homepage).

This reorganizes the flake around buildRustPackage with a shared packageAttrs attrset and a table-driven crossTargets map. rust-overlay only provides dev shell toolchains; packages build with nixpkgs' rustPlatform. The version is read from Cargo.toml, and the chip database and generated shell completions (bash/zsh/fish, via a gen-completions binary) are installed into the package output.

Checks run the full workspace test suite (rflasher-wasm excluded, it needs the wasm32 target). Static musl builds use a new static-linux-programmers feature: the portable programmers plus the Linux-only backends that are pure libc syscalls (internal, linux-spi, linux-mtd) and need no C libraries.

The flake exposes conventional package, app, check, and formatter outputs on x86_64-linux and aarch64-linux, with cross packages/shells (i686, aarch64, armv7, aarch64-musl) on x86_64-linux.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The change adds CLI completion generation and restructures the Nix flake for explicit Linux evaluation, native packaging, cross-compilation, development shells, and exported outputs.

Changes

Linux packaging and development environments

Layer / File(s) Summary
Completion generation support
Cargo.toml, src/bin/gen-completions.rs, .gitignore
The project adds clap_complete, the static-linux-programmers feature, and a binary that generates Bash, Zsh, and Fish completions in a configurable directory.
Native package assembly
flake.nix
The flake centralizes native package attributes, installs chip data and metadata, patches the installed data path, generates shell completions, and exposes native packages, an app, checks, a formatter, and a default development shell.
Cross-target packages and shells
flake.nix
The flake defines target-specific dependencies and toolchains, configures linkers and build settings, and exposes Linux-only cross packages and shells. Musl targets use static-linux-programmers.

Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~45 minutes

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to c1904

The package now includes local build artifacts in its Nix source, which can make builds unnecessarily large and trigger avoidable rebuilds. This is a bounded packaging-efficiency risk and is mergeable with explicit owner awareness or a follow-up cleanup.

Read the version from Cargo.toml.

version is hardcoded. It will drift from the Rust manifest after the next release bump.

If the root Cargo.toml is a virtual workspace manifest, read workspace.package.version instead.

Evaluate each cross nixpkgs instance once.

mkCrossPkgs runs once in mkCrossPackage and again in mkCrossDevShell for the same target. Each call instantiates a full cross nixpkgs. This doubles evaluation time and memory for four targets.

♻️ Proposed refactor
-          mkCrossPkgs =
-            target:
-            import nixpkgs {

+          crossPkgsFor = lib.mapAttrs (
+            _: target:
+            import nixpkgs {
+              inherit system overlays;
+              crossSystem.config = target.config;
+            }
+          ) crossTargets;

Then pass the target name into mkCrossPackage and mkCrossDevShell and use crossPkgsFor.${name} instead of mkCrossPkgs target.

Build the command once and loop over the shells.

The three calls rebuild cli::Cli::command() and repeat the bin name literal "rflasher". The bin name determines the generated file names (rflasher.bash, _rflasher, rflasher.fish), and flake.nix lines 86-89 consume exactly those names. A single constant keeps the producer side consistent.

Addressed the review feedback:

  • derive the package version from workspace.package.version
  • share cross nixpkgs instances between packages and development shells
  • rely on the pkg-config setup hook for cross-library search paths
  • remove app metadata for older Nix compatibility
  • build the completion command once and generate each shell in a loop

Filter build artifacts out of src.

lib.cleanSource removes only VCS files. It keeps target/, completions/, and other local artifacts. The source hash then changes on every local build and the copy into the store can be very large. Use a source filter or lib.fileset.
