after months of practically coming out of nowhere, I've been having problems with the sound (dummy output) on my laptop (PC Componentes PcCom Revolt i7 4060, Intel Raptor Lake, Realtek ALC256, ALSA info --with-all here: https://alsa-project.org/db/?f=a5413ef163e5fa96f4b8c23cf9cef82832f65365), I finally managed, after intensive research, to get reliable sound from the audio jack again with the kernel module snd_hda_intel.

What steps helped in my case (just for the record):

• In 50-alsa-config.lua, set and activate '[“session.suspend-timeout-seconds”] = 0, -- 0 disables suspend'
• Create and save /etc/modprobe.d/snd-hda-intel.conf with content ‘options snd_hda_intel power_save=0’

Now my question as a simple Linux user:

Is it possible (and sensible) to control the analog sound for the system described above via sof-firmware, and if so, where can I get the necessary information (e.g., sof-firmware configuration options, Alsa modprobe options, topology & topology files if needed)?

I was hoping that I could derive the information directly from the ALSA information linked above, but if that is possible, I could use some help, as I have not yet found any useful information on the Internet about the reliable operation of sof-firmware on my laptop model.

@Cliff-pop-os can you provide your kernel log. Audio is either DSP or non DSP configured depending on your HW SKU. It sounds like based on your description that your device in non DSP and uses legacy HDA audio only.

So far I can tell you have a DSP and its loading FW and topology. You also have NV display driver for display audio.

But I see several logs from different boots that look different so I assume you have been changing BIOS settings ?

Log above was missing HDA codec enumeration, whilst log below with HDA looks to be missing DSP.

To me this looks like BIOS incorrectly disabling HDA codec when DSP is enabled, but pls confirm. If so, I'd recommend disabling DSP and using HDA mode only.

I suspected as much after conducting thorough research on this laptop's hardware.

and its loading FW and topology.

Firmware is loading, but based on the very unsatisfactory results, it cannot be the correct one.

I either have HDMI output for Intel Raptor Lake and NVidia audio, but then no PCM audio.

Or I have (randomly) PCM audio and no HDMI audio, with the output on the audio jack running for a few minutes before the sound (e.g. music) has a loud noise, then overloads (especially at bass and low mid frequencies) and shortly afterwards is deactivated by the system (dummy output) and cannot be reactivated even by restarting (sound servers and/or the system).

In addition, a USB audio jack adapter plugged into different USB ports behaves similarly, but differently depending on the USB port. On one USB port, the sound can be output stably for a few minutes before it goes wild, while on the other two USB ports, the sound is similarly distorted as with the aforementioned audio jack, with the difference that the distorted sound from the USB audio jack adapter connected to the USB ports is not deactivated by the system.

Since I use this laptop to produce music, among other things, and therefore depend on clear and flawless sound, this is a very unpleasant situation.

There are no BIOS settings for audio on this laptop.

Of course, I tried many different module parameters for the various sof-firmware modules that I hoped might be related to the problem, using trial and error. In doing so, I also updated the initramfs image several times. Perhaps that explains your observation.
