[Bug]: Icons (favicons, bookmarks, avatar) appear pixelated with fractional scaling on Wayland/GNOME 49 #108

@ReynkeDeVos

Description

@ReynkeDeVos

Operating system

Linux, GNOME 49, Wayland

Version

0.6.7.1

Have you tested that this is not an upstream issue or an issue with your configuration?

  • In Chrome it could not be reproduced there
  • In ungoogled-chromium it could not be reproduced there
  • In Helium with --user-data-dir=$(mktemp -d) I have the same pixelation issue.

Description

Favicons in the tab bar, bookmark icons, and certain UI elements appear pixelated.

Edit:

This bug only occurs on monitors WITH fractional scaling enabled!
gsettings set org.gnome.mutter experimental-features "['scale-monitor-framebuffer']"

How to Reproduce?

  1. Open Helium on a monitor with fractional scaling (125%, 133%, 150%, ...)
  2. Observe the icons in the tab bar or bookmarks bar. Notice the pixelation.
  3. Hover the mouse cursor over a pixelated icon.
  4. Observe that the icon becomes sharp/unpixelated. Favicons in the tab stay pixelated, even when mouseover.

Expected behavior

Icons should render sharply at all times without requiring a mouse hover.

Additional context

  • This issue also occurred in the prior Helium version (0.6.4.1)
  • The issue persists with the default 2-row top-bar layout and the cat-ui.
