A "Help" link describing markdown syntax is not sufficiently discoverable for users without markdown experience. Should have toolbar with common actions. And of course keyboard shortcuts (which the toolbar should advertise).
- https://github.com/lepture/editor should be usable as-is (toolbar + markdown actions for CM!).
- See also Stackedit & Stack Exchange for inspiration.
- I'm tempted to make the buttons include the relevant syntax, e.g. the bold button would not be simply [B] but [B]. However I haven't seen anybody else do it, and it's obvious enough idea that I'm afraid people have usability tested it with bad results...
- https://stackapps.com/questions/3373/mathjax-buttons has great science-specific buttons (and shortcut keys).
