[DISCUSS] Next release: version, timing and cadence
#6019
0.2.0 was released on Oct 8. I'd like to agree on the next release's version, timing and cadence before anyone cuts an RC.
What has landed since 0.2.0
The 0.2.0 RC2 was cut from main on Sept 22. Since then main has gained 222 commits (compare): 40 feat, 117 fix, 11 perf, 27 refactor, the rest tests and docs.
main currently passes the shipped-dependency audit with no moderate-or-above advisories, and the Oct 9 Desktop Nightly built, signed and notarized on all platforms.
Proposal
Version: 0.3.0. Forty new features is more than a patch release usually carries. 0.2.1 also works if people prefer to keep 0.2.x going.
Timing: cut the RC around Oct 13–15. With the PPMC and IPMC votes, that puts the release in late October.
Cadence: aim for roughly one release a month, so each release stays small enough to review.
Scope: unchanged from 0.2.0. The signed source archive is the Apache release. Desktop and CLI packages are convenience artifacts and are not guaranteed for every release.
Questions
0.2.1 or 0.3.0?
Does Oct 13–15 work, or is there something on main that should land or settle first?
Is a monthly cadence realistic for the release manager and the voters?
Mentors: when the RC is up, could you review and vote on the dev@ thread? Your votes carry over to the IPMC vote and let it close sooner.
Claude Code helped compile the change summary and draft this post. I reviewed it.
