The layer is discovered by pkg/config, so it applies to Studio, the TUI and any embedder, not
just the CLI.
A saved config.yaml records intent: only the keys that differ from what the project would
otherwise inherit, plus a config_version stamp. Three consequences: config show --origin can
tell a deliberate choice from an inherited default, a new release's improved default reaches
existing projects, and no absolute path is embedded in a file that may be committed. root is
never persisted for exactly that last reason. Older files are migrated forward on load, and
config show reports when that happened.
!!! tip "Let the harness fill these in"
`slmcode configure` finds the model server running on your machine, asks it
what it serves, and writes `provider`, `endpoint` and `model` for you —
ruling out the embedding, speech and vision models that sit next to the one
you want. In the Studio it is the **Find my model server** panel in
Settings. See [`configure`](cli.md#configure).

max_parallel is how many role calls are in flight at once. A hosted API scales
horizontally, so a fourth concurrent request lands on different hardware and
costs the other three nothing. A single local model server does not: every
request shares one GPU and one KV cache.
Measured against one local oMLX endpoint, warm model, identical tiny prompts:

There is a sharp knee at 2. Going 2 → 4 buys roughly 10-14% more throughput and costs 75-85% worse per-request latency (0.82 → 1.43s, 2.40 → 4.43s).
Why that is a correctness problem, not a preference. Role timeouts are
wall-clock (see role timeouts).
At max_parallel: 4 on a single local endpoint every role's observed latency
inflates about 2.5-2.7× versus running alone, so a role that needs 60s solo
needs roughly 160s — and blows a 75s budget it would otherwise have met.
What slmcode does about it.
- It measures. On first sight of a
(model, endpoint)pair, calibration times 1, 2 and 4 concurrent tiny completions (and 8 only if 4 still scales) and picks the highest level still delivering at least 60% of ideal. Nothing is hardcoded: a server that genuinely scales gets 8. See Calibration, or runslmcode calibrateto see the table. - Failing that, it infers from the endpoint. With calibration off or
unavailable, the default is
2for a single local endpoint and4for a hosted API. "Local" means a local-family provider (local,omlx,mlx,ollama,lmstudio,llamacpp,vllm,litellm,custom) or any provider whose endpoint host is loopback,localhost, or a.localname — fronting a local server with an OpenAI-compatible gateway is still local. The provider name is checked first: anollamaon the LAN is still one Ollama process.
max_parallel=2 (default 4): http://127.0.0.1:8000/v1 is a single local endpoint,
which shares one GPU across concurrent calls — measured 4-way throughput was ~39%
of ideal while per-request latency nearly doubled, and role timeouts are
wall-clock. Override: slmcode config set max_parallel 4
That line is printed once per process, never per wave.
Your setting always wins. Everything above decides a default. Write
max_parallel: 4 in a config file, pass --parallel 4, set
SLMCODE_MAX_PARALLEL=4, or set it from Studio, and you get 4 — no
re-derivation, no re-measurement, no notice. slmcode config show --origin
reports default when it was inferred and project / user / env / flag
when you chose it. slmcode config unset max_parallel hands it back.

Every entry in mcp_servers is spawned as a child process at orchestrator startup — before
the model says anything, before any tool runs, before any permission prompt. .slmcode/config.yaml
lives inside the project, so a cloned repository shipping

So mcp_servers is read only from the user layer ($SLMCODE_USER_CONFIG,
$XDG_CONFIG_HOME/slmcode/config.yaml, ~/.slmcode/config.yaml,
~/.config/slmcode/config.yaml). A project file cannot add to the list, replace it, or clear
it — the pre-project user list is restored wholesale, because a project file that nulls the key
would otherwise silently disable your servers.
Nothing is silent about it: whatever the project file declared is named in a warning that
status, doctor and config show all print, with the exact command that was not started
and the path to move it to.
⚠ .slmcode/config.yaml: mcp_servers is ignored in a project config file — each entry is
spawned as a child process at startup, so a cloned repository could ship one and make
`slmcode run` remote code execution. NOT started:

Move the ones you want to your user config (~/.config/slmcode/config.yaml), or set
SLMCODE_TRUST_PROJECT_MCP=1 for a project file you generated yourself.
This is the right home for them anyway: the same docs or jira server is wanted across every
project. SLMCODE_TRUST_PROJECT_MCP=1 force-honours the project layer, for CI images that
generate the project config themselves.
