CDN for Assets

Overview

Implement a Content Delivery Network (CDN) to efficiently distribute static assets, reduce latency, and improve user experience by serving content from geographically distributed servers.

Acceptance Criteria

CDN Setup

  1. Choose a CDN provider (e.g., AWS CloudFront, Cloudflare, Akamai)
  2. Configure CDN distribution with appropriate origins
  3. Set up custom domain (if required)
  4. Enable HTTPS/TLS encryption
  5. Configure geographic distribution points

Asset Distribution

  1. Identify static assets to be served via CDN (images, CSS, JS, fonts, etc.)
  2. Configure asset upload/sync mechanism
  3. Set up proper file organization and naming conventions
  4. Implement versioning strategy for cache busting

Cache Control

  1. Configure appropriate cache headers for different asset types
  2. Set cache expiration times based on asset update frequency
  3. Implement cache-control directives (public, private, no-cache, etc.)
  4. Configure ETags for efficient conditional requests

Invalidation

  1. Implement cache invalidation strategy
  2. Set up automated invalidation on asset updates
  3. Configure manual invalidation capabilities
  4. Monitor invalidation effectiveness and cache hit rates

Implementation Steps

1. CDN Provider Selection

  • Evaluate providers based on cost, performance, and feature set
  • Consider integration with existing infrastructure (AWS, etc.)

2. Backend Configuration

// Example NestJS service for CDN integration
@Injectable()
export class CdnService {
  private readonly cdnUrl = process.env.CDN_URL;

  getAssetUrl(assetPath: string): string {
    return `${this.cdnUrl}/${assetPath}`;
  }

  async invalidateCache(paths: string[]): Promise<void> {
    // Implement CDN-specific invalidation logic
  }
}

3. Asset Upload Strategy

  • Implement automated upload to CDN on build/deployment
  • Use tools like AWS CLI, Cloudflare API, or custom scripts
  • Ensure proper error handling and retry mechanisms

4. Cache Headers Configuration

// Example middleware for cache control
export class CacheControlMiddleware implements NestMiddleware {
  use(req: Request, res: Response, next: Function) {
    const assetType = this.getAssetType(req.path);
    const cacheDuration = this.getCacheDuration(assetType);

    res.setHeader('Cache-Control', `public, max-age=${cacheDuration}`);
    res.setHeader('ETag', this.generateETag(req.path));

    next();
  }
}

5. Monitoring and Maintenance

  • Set up monitoring for CDN performance metrics
  • Implement logging for cache hits/misses
  • Regular review of cache strategies and invalidation patterns

Testing

  • Verify asset loading from CDN endpoints
  • Test cache behavior with different headers
  • Validate invalidation functionality
  • Performance testing across different geographic regions
