Social Programme

University of Manchester, 29 June – 2 July. All venues are within easy walking distance of campus on Oxford Road.

Monday 29 June

Drinks: Kro Bar, 17:00–18:30
A pub on Oxford Road housed in the former Manchester Temperance Society building. Kro Bar is independent and popular with university staff and students, with a good selection of beers and a relaxed atmosphere. It's just a couple of minutes' walk from campus, making it a good spot to decompress after the first day and get to know your fellow participants over a drink.

Dinner: Navarro Lounge, from 18:30
A short walk down Oxford Road from Kro Bar, Navarro Lounge is an all-day bar and restaurant with a relaxed feel. The menu covers a broad range of dishes, from sharing plates to mains, with good vegetarian and vegan options.

Tuesday 30 June

Drinks and dinner: Sandbar, from 17:00
A nice place to end the week's official social programme. Sandbar is tucked just off Oxford Road on Grosvenor Street and has been one of Manchester's most loved independent bars for many years, particularly popular with artists and students. It has a good and eclectic selection of ales and a chilled atmosphere. In the evening it serves pizzas, so there's no need to move if you're having fun — but there are also plenty of other options nearby.

Wednesday 1 July

Drinks: Big Hands, 17:00–18:30
An institution on Oxford Road. Small, rock-friendly and full of character, with a roof garden for summer evenings. Big Hands has a good selection of beers and a friendly atmosphere, and is a favourite of university staff and students.

Dinner: Turing Tap or the Curry Mile, from 18:30
The Turing Tap is a pub-restaurant named in honour of Alan Turing, who worked nearby at the university. It sits at the south end of Oxford Road, between the campus and Whitworth Park, and offers an extensive all-day food menu of pub dishes.

Alternatively, head ten minutes south on foot to the Curry Mile. Wilmslow Road in Rusholme has the highest concentration of South Asian and Middle Eastern restaurants anywhere in the UK, with origins stretching back to the 1950s and 60s when the first wave of South Asian immigrants settled in the area. The strip is lively, the food is excellent and affordable, and there's no need to book.

Options include: Mughli (contemporary South Asian, critically acclaimed), Sanam (the oldest restaurant on the mile and a community institution) and Shere Khan (a Curry Mile stalwart since 1987, well-suited to larger groups).

The Curry Mile

No visit to this part of Manchester is complete without a trip to the Curry Mile — the stretch of Wilmslow Road through Rusholme, about a 15–20 minute walk south from the Kilburn Building (or a very short bus ride on any Oxford Road service heading south). It is one of the most celebrated concentrations of South Asian restaurants in Europe, with dozens of Pakistani, Indian and Bangladeshi restaurants, sweet shops and cafés open late into the night.
