Lexiconga refuses to load

Hi there!

A bit new to this so I hope I'm doing this right.

I've been working on a dictionary for the last few weeks, but after restarting my pc for updates I can no longer load my Lexiconga - it remains stuck on loading words. I use a desktop app, which I've reset several times, but unfortunately nothing happens. Hope there's a way to solve this - looking forward to hearing it! Thanks for helping in advance :)

Hi @Infiniyah, sorry I didn't see this until just now! I'm going to need some more details:

1. What desktop app are you using? Lexiconga doesn't have a desktop app, so I'm not sure what you're referring to 🙂
2. Are you logged in? If you are using Lexiconga without being logged in and whatever app/browser you were using clears its localStorage, then there is no way to restore your data unless you manually exported it.
3. If you are logged in, please provide your username and I can check the database to make sure your dictionary is safe.

Also, if you have a chance, it would be super helpful if you provided a screen recording using JAM or a similar service so I can see what exactly is happening. JAM also includes some extra browser details like the network communications going to and coming from the server, which provides extra help for trying to figure out what's wrong 🙂

Hi @SchonClematis, thanks for the extra details! I was able to look at your dictionary and figure out what the problem was.

It appears that you're using slashes and parentheses in your words & orthography, which is causing the code to behave in unexpected ways when trying to translate the orthography in the display. The orthographic translation doesn't expect punctuation, and thus is passed directly to a regular expression (a coding syntax for finding matches). Since parentheses are valid characters for building regular expressions, it is causing an error because it's not actually a regular expression, and that's what is preventing your words from displaying.

Fortunately, we can work around this in two different ways: 1) Change the orthography for your ʐ character to something other than z) like z, or something like that (just avoid parentheses or slashes) or 2) put a backslash \ in before the parentheses character (z\)) to cause the regular expression to read it as a character and not a syntax marker.
Option 1 will require you to go through and replace anywhere you've used "z)" in a word, but will result in more stability if I am able to fix the code in the future.
Option 2 will be a quick fix but might break the display again if I am able to get the code fixed.

The choice is yours! I tested Option 2 with a copy of your dictionary and it worked as expected, but I would recommend Option 1, especially while your dictionary is small :)
