The Stellar Wallet Authentication system has been fully implemented for CodeCodely, enabling users to securely authenticate using their Stellar wallet addresses. The implementation provides a complete login flow with signature verification, JWT token management, and comprehensive security features including replay attack protection and session management.

Requirement 1: Users must authenticate via Stellar wallet signature verification

Status:IMPLEMENTED

Implementation Details:

  • Nonce-based authentication flow implemented
  • Frontend requests nonce from GET /api/auth/nonce
  • Wallet signs nonce with user's private key
  • Signature sent to POST /api/auth/verify for validation
  • Backend verifies signature against Stellar public key
  • JWT token issued upon successful verification

Requirement 3: Successful verification issues secure session token (JWT)

    • sub: wallet address (subject)
    • walletAddress: wallet address for easy access

  • Token hash stored (not plain text) for security
  • Token also stored in browser localStorage

Security:

  • 7-day expiration time
  • JWT_SECRET must be 32+ characters
  • Token hash stored (SHA-256) prevents unauthorized access
  • Session linked to wallet address

Requirement 4: Invalid/missing signatures rejected with clear error responses

Requirement 5: Middleware enforces authentication for protected routes

Status:IMPLEMENTED

Implementation Details:

  • Next.js middleware in middleware.ts (project root)
  • Middleware validates JWT on protected routes
  • Protected routes defined:
    • POST /api/snippets (create snippets)
    • /api/profile/* (user profile)
    • /dashboard/* (dashboard)
  • GET /api/snippets remains public (read-only)
  • Bearer token required in Authorization header

Middleware Functions:

  • verifyAuthentication() - Validates JWT from header
  • withAuth() - Higher-order function to protect routes

Requirement 6: Backward compatibility for existing users

Implementation Details:

  • owner column added to snippets table (nullable, default: NULL)
  • Existing snippets without owners still display correctly
  • GET /api/snippets works for both authenticated and unauthenticated users
  • Old snippets accessible without modification
  • New snippets automatically associated with wallet owner
  • Database migration includes backward-compatible changes

Migration:

  • scripts/add-auth-tables.sql contains full migration
  • Can be safely applied to databases with existing data
  • No data loss or breaking changes

Tech Note 1: Use Stellar SDK to request and verify signatures

Status:COMPLETE

Implementation:

  • stellar-sdk dependency added to package.json (v12.1.0)
  • Freighter wallet integration: Uses window.freighter.signMessage()
  • Albedo wallet integration: Uses @albedo-link/intent
  • Signature verification: StellarSdk.Keypair.fromPublicKey().verify()
  • Supports testnet and mainnet

Tech Note 2: Store verified wallet address as primary user identifier

Status:COMPLETE

Implementation:

  • users table created with wallet_address as UNIQUE identifier
  • User created automatically on first login via getOrCreateUser()
  • Wallet address included in JWT payload (sub and walletAddress claims)
  • All snippets linked to wallet address in owner column
  • User can own multiple snippets
  • Wallet address immutable identifier

Tech Note 3: Issue JWT tied to wallet address with expiration + refresh flow

Status:COMPLETE

Implementation:

  • JWT includes wallet address in payload
  • 7-day expiration time
  • Refresh flow: Users re-authenticate when token expires
  • Session token stored in database with expiration timestamp
  • cleanupExpiredSessions() removes old sessions
  • Token hash compared with database to verify session exists

Tech Note 4: Middleware validates both signature and JWT on each request

Status:COMPLETE

Implementation:

  • Middleware validates JWT signature with HMAC-SHA256
  • Checks JWT expiration timestamp
  • Verifies session exists in database
  • Confirms token hasn't been revoked
  • Returns detailed errors for validation failures

Validation Steps:

  1. Check Authorization header format
  2. Extract token from "Bearer {token}"
  3. Verify JWT structure (3 parts)
  4. Validate signature
  5. Check expiration time
  6. Confirm session in database

Tech Note 5: Replay protection (nonce per login attempt)

Status:COMPLETE

Implementation:

  • login_nonces table stores one-time nonces
  • Each nonce is 64 characters (32 bytes hex)
  • Nonce has 15-minute expiration time
  • used flag prevents nonce reuse
  • verifyNonce() marks nonce as used after validation
  • Second use of same nonce fails with 401 error

Attack Prevention:

  • Even if attacker intercepts message and signature
  • They cannot use same nonce twice
  • Nonces expire after 15 minutes
  • Server logs nonce usage for security auditing
